Billions 2×02 Dead Cat Bounce preview

Axe publicly spars with a rival hedge fund manager.

On the season two premiere of Billions, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damien Lewis) geared up for revenge against Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) who was already having a rough time.

Since the season one finale Axe had rebuilt the Axe Capital offices that he ripped apart. Waiting outside, the staff were desperate to get back to it. However, once reopened they found plenty of changes waiting for them.

Axe had learnt that he can’t trust anyone so in addition to just fixing up the office he added extra security measures. These included employee bracelets, security barriers and no unauthorised electronic gadgets to be brought to work. He had also recruited a new chief of staff called Stephanie (Shaunette Renée Wilson) that everyone needed to go through to even talk with him.

Meanwhile, Chuck found himself separated from Wendy (Maggie Siff) and they were taking turns to live at home for the kids. He also found out that he was under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility. This resulted in a man called Oliver Dake (Christopher Denham) taking an office at Chuck’s work to conduct the investigation.

Dake found most things in order but concentrated a lot of time on Chuck’s point man, Bryan (Toby Leonard Moore). He knew that Bryan had met with Axe and was offered a job.

Later, Dake discovered a strange transaction of $5 million to Wendy from Axe Capital. Axe gave it to her last season as a bonus for her incredible work in an attempt to keep her. The strange thing about the transaction though is that it happened on the day Chuck dropped his investigation into Axe Capital which made it look like a bribe.

Wendy had stayed away from Axe and was working for herself. As well as giving motivational speeches she was looking for new clients. She also entertained an offer from a rival hedge-fund company which really annoyed Axe. So much so that he paid her a visit to try and get her back but she refused.

Elsewhere in the episode, we met a new brilliant intern called Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) who is gender non-binary. Axe’s right-hand man, Wags (David Costabile), spent his time taking drugs and trying to get himself a membership to an elite dating website. He initially tried to get one of their top tech guys to hack an account for him. However, Stephanie found out and revealed she could get him an invite as she was already a member.

Axe’s wife, Lara (Malin Akerman) dealt with a girl suffering from anaphylactic shock while at the kids school. She was so furious with the nurse on duty for not helping that she had her fired on the spot. Instead she had a friend step in and tried to encourage her to take the now vacant job.

At the end of the episode, Axe revealed his plan to destroy Chuck. He had Bach (Glen Fleshler) track down as many people as possible with legal complaints against Chuck. Axe then paid for their lawsuits and served Chuck with all 127 suits on the same day. If it works it will take the attention off Axe and leave Chuck fired or in prison.
