Revisiting Peter Davison’s era of ‘Doctor Who’

The Fifth Doctor is weighed down by some terrible companions…

The early part of Davison’s run is further weighted down by the leaden combination of Adric and Nyssa. Taken in isolation, they’re not too bad, but together (such as in the final episodes of ‘The Visitation’ where they are sidelined to collaborate on making a machine in the TARDIS), the stagey and mechanical acting (so much hand-flapping…) is all a bit much to take. It’s a relief in ‘Kinda’ to get some respite from Nyssa, at least just for a few precious episodes. No wonder the era really picks up from the third story.
