Revisiting Patrick Troughton’s era of ‘Doctor Who’

The show keeps improving

Over three seasons, the Troughton era manages to keep getting better and better. Contemporary audiences are much more familiar with intricately linked stories. We are expected to remember events or characters from years earlier. It’s enjoyable in the Troughton era for characters to reappear later on, especially Professor Travers (Jack Watling). Not only are you asked to recall the character from ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ three stories later by the time of ‘The Web of Fear’, but you’re also expected to recognise him when he’s playing the character as substantially older. These are signs of a confident series. Even ideas that are repeated, such as Troughton’s four encounters with the Cybermen, all manage to be incredibly diverse stories, and only one (‘The Wheel in Space’) is sub-par.
