Revisiting Patrick Troughton’s era of ‘Doctor Who’

The seasons are very long

With forty-four episodes in his third and final season, there is an awful lot of ‘Doctor Who’ made over a short space of time to get through when revisiting this era. It’s little wonder that Troughton disappears for an episode during ‘The Seeds of Death’ after he demanded a week off to recover his energy. He is on record as stating that the work schedule was punishing and pushing him towards exhaustion. When you contemplate just how much ‘Doctor Who’ was made each year back then, it’s remarkable any actor could have sustained such a workload, let alone gave his all for three solid years. Although Pertwee played the Doctor for two more seasons, he only made a handful more episodes than Troughton. How was it possible for the production team to achieve the sustained quality that they managed? It’s almost miraculous.
