Revisiting Patrick Troughton’s era of ‘Doctor Who’

There’s an increasing use of location filming

‘The War Machines’ at the end of the Hartnell era was the first glimpse of the direction the show would take, with earthbound invasion plots, filming on the streets, and the increasing involvement of the military. The Troughton era takes that to the next level. Revered director Douglas Camfield, who had worked on the show during the Hartnell era, had a gift for bringing these stories to life with inspired action sequences. We are lucky to have episode four of ‘The Web of Fear’, which showcases his talents as the Yeti and UNIT troops battle it out. He later repeated the trick with the Cybermen in ‘The Invasion’. Just as the foundations for the Second Doctor’s era were laid at the end of the First Doctor’s time, so the series signalled what was to come once the Third Doctor arrived on the scene. There is increasing confidence to run with longer stories and more intrinsic story locations.
