The final episode of Game of Thrones season 8, gave us the aftermath of The Last War where Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) pretty much burnt the city to the ground.
If you haven’t seen Game of Thrones season 8 episode 6 yet and don’t like to read spoilers then please stop reading now. If you are up-to-date and want to relive the action then keep on reading.
The episode began immediately after the battle with ash falling on the city as it continued to burn. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) walked through the devastation in horror, surrounded by piles of rubble and bodies as well as a few wounded survivors. He was followed by Jon/Aegon (Kit Harington) and Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) and they walked through the streets in silence. Tyrion told them he’d find them later, Jon said it wasn’t safe and offered some men, but he said he wanted to go alone.
As Tyrion walked off toward the ruins of the Red Keep, Jon came across Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) who had some surrendered Lannister soldiers on their knees. Jon stepped in and said it was over but Grey Worm said he would kill all who followed Cersei (Lena Headey). Jon grabbed Grey Worm and the Unsullied drew their weapons. Davos managed to calm the situation and took Jon away saying they should talk to Dany. As they left, Grey Worm began slitting the throats of his prisoners.
Tyrion entered the Red Keep to try and find out what happened to his siblings, Cersei and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). He made it to the Map Room which was now in ruins. He grabbed a torch and set it aflame before descending down the path Jaime would have taken. He had to climb over debris before coming to the place his siblings met their end. He spotted Jaime’s golden hand among the debris and began to clear the bricks. He uncovered the embracing bodies and broke down in tears.
On the streets, Arya (Maisie Williams) heard the Dothraki shouting and went to investigate. Jon did the same and began climbing the steps to the Red Keep where a large Targaryen flag had been placed. The Unsullied filled the area in formation as they waited for their queen. Grey Worm waited at the top of the steps as Drogon roared above. The troops cheered and Dany appeared with Drogon behind. It was a cool shot that made it look like Dany had wings for a moment.
Dany walked to the top of the steps looking proud and triumphant. She gave a stirring speech where she thanked her army for keeping their promises and giving her the Seven Kingdoms. She named Grey Worm her commander and Master of War. She spoke of freeing King’s Landing from a tyrant and promised to liberate the world. She asked if they’d break the wheel with her as her troops continued to cheer and Drogon roared some more.
During the speech, Tyrion stood with Jon. The imp looked nervous like he was about to do something bad. He began to move forward and approached Dany. She told him that she knew he freed his brother and that he had committed treason. He replied that he had freed his brother but she had slaughtered a city. Next he grabbed his Hand of the Queen pin and threw it down the steps. Dany ordered Grey Worm to take him away. As he left, Tyrion gave Jon a concerned look. Dany followed.
Jon spotted Arya and asked what she was doing there. She said she came to kill Cersei but his queen had beaten her to it. Jon said that Dany was everyone’s queen now. Arya pointed out that Sansa (Sophie Turner) didn’t agree. Jon asked that she wait for him outside the city. Arya said that Dany knew who he was now and that he’d always be a threat to her. Arya said she knew a killer when she saw one.
Jon decided to go and speak to Tyrion who was now a prisoner. Jon surrendered his weapons and Tyrion asked if he’d brought wine. Tyrion thanked Jon for visiting him and pointed out that Dany never kept prisoners for long. Presuming he’d be executed soon he joked that the ashes of Varys (Conleth Hill) would tell his that they told him this would happen. He asked Jon if there was life after death but Jon said not that he’d seen.
Jon said he couldn’t justify what had happened but continued to stress Dany was queen. Tyrion said he knew that Jon didn’t want to betray Dany but that he didn’t think Jon would have burned the city down. He said that everywhere she went, evil men died and everyone cheered. He continued that he knew Jon loved her and that he’d also loved and believed in her. Jon replied by quoting Maester Aemon that “Love is the death of duty.”
Tyrion changed tactic and asked if Jon believed that Tyrion would be the last man Dany executed. He pointed out that Jon as the true heir to the Iron Throne was a danger to Dany. Jon still supported her until Tyrion pointed out that his sisters, Arya and Sansa, would refuse to bend the knee. As Jon left Tyrion said he had to make a choice.
Jon walked through the snow toward the Red Keep. Before entering a pile of snow began to move and it was revealed that Drogon was lay underneath. The dragon turned to sniff Jon before deciding to let him pass. Inside, Dany was in what was left of the throne room and approached the Iron Throne which miraculously was left standing. She touched the arm of the chair before turning and seeing Jon.
Dany seemed pretty chuffed at how things had worked out but Jon questioned why Grey Worm was executing prisoners in the streets. She used the excuse that everything was Cersei’s fault. He urged her to forgive Tyrion and she replied he had conspired with her enemies. She spoke of Jon ruling together with her as they built a new world and broke the wheel. He moved in close and said she was his queen now and always. As they shared a kiss Jon plunged his dagger into her chest. Blood ran from her nose and mouth as he lay her down and she died in his arms.
As Jon wept, Drogon could be heard screeching and he soon came to investigate. Jon stepped back and Drogon checked on his mother and nudged her lifeless body. It didn’t look good for Jon as Drogon began to rage and suddenly began to breathe fire. Instead of targeting Jon, Drogon let his rage out on the Iron Throne and melted it down. He then scooped up Dany and flew away.
Some weeks later, Tyrion was released from his cell by Grey Worm. He was marched to the Dragonpit where he found a meeting taking place between the lords of Westeros. Those present included Sansa, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright), Arya, Sam (John Bradley-West), Ser Davos, Gendry (Joe Dempsie), Ser Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan), Edmure Tully (Tobias Menzies) and even Robin Arryn (Lino Facioli).
The group struggled to decide anything and Grey Worm wanted Tyrion and Jon, who was also now a prisoner, executed. Tyrion suggested that they needed to choose a new king or queen. Edmure began with a speech of why he was the best man for the job but Sansa told her uncle to sit down. Sam proposed letting the people vote and everyone thought it a joke.
Tyrion said he didn’t want to rule as people either hated him for supporting Dany or betraying her. He asked what united people and said that it wasn’t armies, gold or flags but stories. Tyrion suggested that Bran the Broken was best placed to lead. Sansa said he didn’t want it and that he couldn’t have children. Tyrion said they were good things and proposed that all future rulers should be chosen at the Dragonpit and not born into the role.
Tyrion put the question to Bran about wanting to rule and he said why did he think he came all this way. Everyone voted and gave an “Aye” for Bran to be their new ruler. Well everyone but Sansa, she said the North needed to remain independent and Bran agreed. In his first decision as Lord of the now Six Kingdoms, Bran said he wanted Tyrion as his hand. Tyrion wasn’t keen on the idea and neither was Grey Worm, but Bran said Tyrion would spend the rest of his life fixing the mistakes he had made.
Later, Jon was informed that a decision was made to send him back to the Night’s Watch. He wouldn’t be allowed to marry or have kids or lands. Jon asked if his killing of Dany was right. Tyrion said to ask him in ten years. As Jon got ready to leave for Castle Black, Grey Worm and the Unsullied boarded boats to set sail for Naath.
Before leaving, Jon got to say an emotional goodbye to the remaining Starks – Bran, Sansa and Arya. Sansa wished there was another way and asked for forgiveness. He told her that it was down to her that the North was once again free and that she was the best the North could ask for. Jon offered Arya to come and visit whenever she wanted but she had other plans to set sail for the west of Westeros “where the maps stop.” Jon apologised to Bran for not being there for him but Bran said that he’d been exactly where he was supposed to be.
Meanwhile, Brienne flicked through the pages of a tome about knights. She found a page dedicated to Jaime and decided to finish his story. She ended that he died protecting his queen.
At the Red Keep, Tyrion tidied the chairs ready for the first meeting of the new council. They soon arrive and are revealed to be Sam, Bronn (Jerome Flynn), Davos and Brienne. Sam presented Tyrion with a large tome called A Song of Fire and Ice which he’d helped one of the maester’s write to document the history of everything that happened. It was reported that Drogon had been spotted flying east before they got down to business. Most revolved around asking Bronn, the new Master of Coin, for money. Typical Bronn seemed more concerned with rebuilding the brothels.
The finale ended with a montage of what Jon, Sansa and Arya were up to. Arya boarded a ship sporting the Stark Direwolf sigil as she began to set sail on her next adventure to the west. Sansa was crowned Queen in the North at Winterfell. Jon arrived at the Wall and Castle Black where he was reunited with Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) and Ghost! We finally got to see Jon give Ghost some attention before they headed north of the Wall with the Wildlings.
