From the Red Wedding to Vecna: The 10 most heart racing TV moments of all time

There’s nothing quite like a television moment that stops you mid-breath, and according to new research, Britain wouldn’t have it any other way. A study of 2,000 TV fans, commissioned by Asda Pharmacy, reveals that as many as seven in ten Brits say the most thrilling thing in their lives is a great TV show, with dramas and thrillers leading the charge as the nation’s favourite genres. Whether it’s a sudden betrayal, a drawn-out standoff or a life-or-death showdown, viewers are increasingly seeking out shows that get the heart racing and the palms sweating.

Unsurprisingly, recent television juggernauts sit alongside all-time classics in the newly revealed list of the most heart-racing TV moments ever. The Traitors makes a strong showing, with multiple entries including the tense turret standoff between Fiona and Rachel and the show’s now-infamous betrayals around the Round Table. Stranger Things also dominates, with Max’s desperate battle against Vecna in the cemetery, soundtracked by Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, and the sprawling season four finale both ranking near the top. Meanwhile, moments of TV history such as Game of Thrones’ brutal Red Wedding, Happy Valley’s harrowing kitchen confrontation, and EastEnders’ Christmas Day divorce papers prove that unforgettable tension transcends genre and era.

Television critic Toby Earle, who contributed to the study, believes the appeal lies in total emotional immersion. When a show pulls viewers so deeply into its world that every twist feels personal, the rush can rival any real-life adrenaline hit. That sense of uncertainty, he says, is what keeps audiences glued to the screen, whether it’s watching traitors turn on each other or witnessing a carefully built storyline implode in a single, shocking scene. It’s a thrill that lingers long after the credits roll, leaving many viewers reaching for the kettle to calm their nerves.

The survey suggests those nerves are very real. Nearly one in five Brits say watching tense scenes physically raises their heart rate, while more than a third named this season’s Traitor versus Traitor showdown as the most pulse-pounding moment of all. Over 70 percent admit the show leaves them more shaken than scripted drama, and almost two-thirds struggle to relax afterwards. With adrenaline running high, Asda Pharmacy is encouraging viewers to channel that awareness into looking after their heart health, reminding audiences that while TV-induced spikes are temporary, high blood pressure often goes unnoticed.
