Game of Thrones season 8: Our 13 burning questions ahead of episode 5

Ahead of the fifth episode of Game of Thrones season 8, I’ve been wondering about the big questions I need answering. The Last of the Starks was mostly setting up the final two episodes but the characters who died will surely have a huge impact on Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).

It’s near impossible to predict the outcome of the Last War at King’s Landing in episode 5 but I’m hoping it answers at least some of the following 13 questions.

If you aren’t up to date with Game of Thrones and prefer to avoid spoilers then please stop reading now.

1. Did Euron realise that Cersei’s baby isn’t his?

I’m pretty confident that Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) can’t stand Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk). However, she’s fast running out of allies and the cocky, obnoxious madman has a habit of delivering on his bold claims. To keep him sweet, Cersei reluctantly let him into her bed back in episode 1.

In episode 4, in a further effort to keep Euron onside, Cersei told him the news of her pregnancy. The baby is believed to be Jaime’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) but Cersei let Euron think it was his, with a promise their child would rule.

At the end of episode 4 Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) spoke to his sister to request she surrender to Dany. He spoke of her unborn child which he shouldn’t have known about if it was Euron’s. Did Euron notice this detail? If so, what action will he take after being manipulated?

2. Can Dany do anything to protect Drogon against the Scorpions?

With three dragons, Dany always seemed pretty much unstoppable. Sadly these awesome beasts are surprisingly vulnerable to ranged attacks. Qyburn’s (Anton Lesser) Scorpion bolt throwers have wounded Drogon in the past and killed Rhaegal just last episode. The Night King also got in on the dragon killing action with an ice javelin when he took down Viserion.

The ramparts at King’s Landing are covered in Scorpions just waiting for Drogon to get too close. Dany is obviously aware of the danger of these weapons so made him stay back when she tried to get Cersei to surrender. Right now Drogon also appears to be the last living dragon. So is there anything she can do?

The obvious option is to just keep Drogon out of range but this really limits the use of her most powerful weapon.

Finding an unprotected area of King’s Landing might be tricky if Scorpions have been placed right around the city. Dany could take Drogon up high out of range and swoop down into the city but this sounds dangerous.

Maybe it’s possible to armour Drogon? Although I can’t imagine it’s easy to produce a suit of armour for a dragon, and his wings in particular would be tough to protect, but a certain amount could make him more resilient against this threat.

3. Will Dany be able to control her rage?

After the Battle of Winterfell, Dany started to realise just how isolated she was becoming. She feels her right to the Iron Throne is under threat from Jon/Aegon (Kit Harington). She’s lost a lot of people loyal to her and the deaths of Rhaegal and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) were the last straw.

She somehow managed to walk away from Cersei but the look on her face showed just how angry she was. If she can’t keep her cool she’ll fall right into Cersei’s trap. There’s a serious risk of Dany going full Mad Queen and becoming the villain if she becomes hellbent on burning King’s Landing to the ground.

4. How many people will Grey Worm kill?

Dany wasn’t the only one to be affected by the death of Missandei. Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) had to stand there helplessly as he watched his love decapitated by the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson). He also needs to keep hold of his rage but I’d bet money on Grey Worm taking most of King’s Landing on his own to get revenge.

We’re all desperate to see the Hound (Rory McCann) take on his undead brother, the Mountain (see #8 below), but if Grey Worm gets the chance I’d fancy his chances. Grey Worm is surely in danger of losing his life in episode 5 but I hope he manages to survive.

5. Will Arya go straight for Cersei?

I’m not sure that Arya will get to finish off everyone on her kill list but the one I’d like to see her get would be Cersei. With Arya being the one who took down the Night King it feels unlikely but if she did go straight for her then it could be a game changer.

Going for Cersei is a very risky move though, particularly with the Mountain by her side. Could a fight between Arya and the Mountain be on the cards?

6. What is Euron scared of in the episode 5 preview trailer?

This is a hard one to predict but so far nothing has seemed to phase Euron. The trailer features a shot of him (see pic above) aboard his ship and the Red Keep can be seen behind him in the distance. What’s intriguing about this shot is that Euron appears to be looking up into the sky and he looks very worried.

Drogon is the only creature that I’m aware of that could be flying to King’s Landing. Euron’s previously faced off against the dragons and won so what could have him worrying?

7. Who is the mystery hooded figure in the episode 5 preview trailer?

If you look at the trailer above around the 23 second mark you’ll see what I presume are Golden Company troops marching. Now look carefully between them and you’ll see a mystery hooded figure walking in the opposite direction.

I’d presume that this is Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) heading to confront Cersei, which would be a very interesting conversation. If it’s not Jaime then next best guess would be the Hound, which brings me onto my next question.

8. Will we finally get Cleganebowl?

Game of Thrones - 7x07

Cleganebowl is a fan-created theory that the Hound and the Mountain will fight each other to the death. The Hound has had it in for his brother since he burned his face when they were younger.

In season 7 they finally came face to face at the dragonpit where the Hound warned his brother that he was coming for him. Now would seem the perfect, and possibly last, chance to have the pair clash. Here’s hoping for an epic fight and the Hound to be victorious.

9. Will Cersei use Wildfire again?

The highly explosive liquid has been used several times on the show such as The Battle of Blackwater and the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor. It’s unpredictable but devastating and if Cersei finds a way to use it again to win the Last War then I’m sure she will.

10. Will Bran finally do something with his powers?

Game of Thrones - 8x03

I’ve been expecting something special from Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) for ages now and each time he disappoints. Maybe he’ll find a new army of dragons? Warg into Golden Company and use them to take out Cersei? Travel through time to meddle with the past? Whatever happens this may well be his last chance to do something incredible so let’s hope he does.

11. Will anyone betray Daenerys?

Game of Thrones - 8x04

As mentioned above in #3, if Dany can’t control her rage she could follow in the footsteps of Targaryen’s like her father and go mad. A mad Dany with a dragon could be hard to stop and while she may win the battle, what’s the point if she kills thousands of innocents. I’d imagine that only Arya or Jon/Aegon would go up against her to stop her.

12. Will anyone betray Cersei?

Dany isn’t the only one who could be out of control. Cersei is just as dangerous and perfectly capably of carrying out whatever horrific acts are necessary to get the job done. There are plenty of people in line that could betray her. My picks would be Euron or Jaime.

13. Who will survive until the finale?

I’ve saved the hardest to predict until last. Just who will survive the Last War? I’m expecting a larger body count than at the Battle of Winterfell with plenty of the big names breathing their last. Whatever happens in this penultimate episode should give us some strong clues about how the show will end.

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5 will air on the 13th May at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. Need to recap on the story so far? All episodes of Game of Thrones from series 1-7 are now available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
