The war between the Old Gods and the New continues.

There was more drama off-screen between seasons of American Gods than there was in the entire first season with showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green being let go. Things finally calmed down and we can now all sit back and watch season 2.

Many critics have slammed the second season so far claiming it lacks the charm and mystery of season one. Thankfully I’m not a critic and I judge things by whether I enjoy them or not. I’ve been fortunate enough to have watched the first two episodes of season 2 in advance and let me tell you, they are awesome.

Watch the season 2 trailer below:

Season 2 opens with Mr World (Crispin Glover) and Technical Boy (Bruce Langley) racing from the scene of the Easter Event that ended season one. The Goddess Media is now gone, as Gillian Anderson quit the show and Mr World needs to find himself a New Media. To this end, he enlists the top-secret underground location known as Blackbriar.

Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), Mr Wednesday (Ian McShane), Laura Moon (Emily Browning), and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) are also all on the run after the events at Easter’s Party. They are making their way to the ‘House on the Rock’, the meeting place for Wednesday’s meeting of Old Gods. The House on the Rock is a weird place and fits the atmosphere of the show perfectly. Upon arrival, we find that  Salim (Omid Abtahi) and Jinn (Mousa Kraish) are already there and Bilquis (Yetide Badaki) arrives shortly after.

In all a dozen Gods make it to the house the for the meeting. The meeting starts with all of the invited riding a carousel which spins so fast they are all transported into the head of Mr Wednesday. The landscape here is reminiscent of a Viking settlement and the origins of Odin.

Meeting over, the group head to a diner for food. Mr World has set up an ambush and a sniper ends up killing Zorya. Shadow manages to get to the gunman but as he does he is sucked into the air in a seemingly X-files type abduction.

Overall I personally really enjoyed the episode. It had a pretty slow pace about it but given that it’s the first episode of a new season I would expect this. Episode 1 was all about setting the tone for the episodes to come.
