American Gods season 2 review – The first two episodes

It’s been a heck of a long wait for American Gods to come back to our screens and thankfully there’s not long to go. Since season 1 ended the show has been plagued with issues behind the scenes. Now all of that is sorted out American Gods season 2 will air on Amazon Prime Video on 11th March.

I’ve been lucky enough to watch the first 2 episodes already and let me tell you that they are brilliant. I’ve read some other reviews out there that slate the show but for me, season 2 is delivering in spades.  I did find it a little hard to remember exactly what had happened, in detail, in season 1 so I’d recommend re-watching to bring yourself back up to speed before you start viewing on the 11th. Don’t worry there are no spoilers so you are safe to read on.

Season 2 picks up right where season 1 ended after the massacre at Easter’s party and we continue to follow Mr Wednesday (Ian McShane) and friends as he strives to unite the old gods to join him in his war against the new.

The show continues to be dark and moody yet funny at the same time. We still get the same fantastic foul mouthed banter between Laura Moon (Emily Browning), aka Dead Wife, and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) along with the moody Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) being as broody as ever. Mr Wednesday continues with his overly theatric antics and we are also introduced to some new characters.

As you would expect, the visuals are as stunning as ever and the two episodes I’ve watched feel steeped in mysticism and weirdness. As with season 1, the pace of the episodes is pretty slow and I think this is what may have put some people off the show in the first place. For me I find this slower pace gives me time to wonder and actually think about what’s going on rather than just being bombarded with plot twist after plot twist.

Now to be clear just because the pace is slow it doesn’t mean nothing is going on. Each of the first two episodes reveals more and more about the Gods and the mysterious Shadow Moon and gives you just enough to make you want to learn more. The writers have done a great job of getting me caught on the hook.

I assure you that if you were a fan of season 1 you are going to love season 2 based on what I’ve seen so far. I’m definitely hooked again and cannot wait to get stuck in to the season properly once it has its full release.
