EF’s Underdogs: introducing Paul Wetz

EF’s Underdogs is all about new music and this week I speak to German singer and songwriter, Paul Wetz, who started his musical journey touring Europe with Texan born Berlin based singer Sean Bradford in the summers of 2016 and 2017. His music is dividing opinions but his enthusiasm I find quite endearing. I caught up with him to talk about music and up coming events.

Hello, how are you?

Hello, I am hungry, thanks for asking.

How did you get into music?

I secretly watched MTV when I was way to young with my older sisters and started playing air guitar and mimicking the singers.

That made me save up for a real guitar and write songs when I was about 7.

Could you describe your music to our readers?

It’s indie/singer & songwriter music that flirts with deep dance music.

You have a single out, could you tell us about it?

The song is called Surrender and is the title track of a 5 track EP. I wrote it during the dark and cold Winter last year in Stockholm when I was missing my ex-girlfriend. The song was written for her to show her how appreciation for our relationship.

Can you describe your creative process? When do you feel most inspired?

Usually I sit down with the guitar and just start improvising and belting out what I feel in the moment. Then I record the bits that I liked into my phone and develop them into songs right away. When I have intense feeling (especially when I feel bad) the music is my comfort-place. It’s almost like I can look at my feelings a bit more from the outside, when I listen to the song afterwards.

Do you have any rituals before a live shows?

I eat a lot for breakfast since I am too excited and don’t want to eat in the afternoon or evening on the day of the show. Right before I go on stage I want to be alone and think of everyone that I can imagine and thank them.

What else can we expect from you this year (album, EP, tour)?

You can expect lots of video Content on YouTube and lots of collaborations, also with UK House Producers.
