Ant-Man and the Wasp – everything we know so far

After the record breaking success of Black Panther and the earth shattering events of Avengers: Infinity War, the final MCU film of 2018 is on its way (but on a much smaller scale) in the shape of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

This sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man will once again see Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), the criminal turned superhero – and occasional Avenger – donning his Ant-Man suit for another miniature-sized adventure.

But this time he’s not going it alone. Teased as it was at the end of Ant-Man, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) is going to take up the mantle left by her mother, and become the Wasp. Finally we have a female superhero in the MCU with her name in the title of the film. As Hope said herself, “it’s about damn time.”

Here’s everything we know so far about Ant-Man and the Wasp…

When will Ant-Man and the Wasp be released?

Thanks to the World Cup, viewers in the UK will have to wait a whole month longer than our friends in America. Ant-Man and the Wasp will be released in the UK on August 3rd.

Who will star in Ant-Man and the Wasp?

Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are both returning as Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne, aka Ant-Man and the Wasp. They are also joined by Michael Peña as fan favourite Luis, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, the designer of the Ant-Man suit. Bobby Cannavale and Judy Greer also reprise their roles from the first film.

New additions to the cast include Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, thought to be lost in the Quantum Realm.

The final big addition to the cast is young British actress Hannah John-Kamen, who is playing Ghost – a criminal who gains the ability to phase through objects after stealing Pym technology.

Who will direct Ant-Man and the Wasp?

Peyton Reed, the director of Ant-Man has returned for the sequel.

Who will write the screenplay for Ant-Man and the Wasp?

The script has been written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari. It is based on the Ant-Man comics by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, and the character of Wasp by Stan Lee, Ernie Hart, and Jack Kirby.

What can we expect from Ant-Man and the Wasp?

I think we can be absolutely certain that the film won’t take place after Infinity War. It might be the first post-Infinity War MCU film, but there’s a light-hearted tone to Ant-Man that doesn’t really fit with the apocalyptic shenanigans of the last Avengers film.

So picking up sometime after the events of Captain America: Civil War, the new film will find Scott grappling with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father. As he struggles to re-balance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past.

Which all sounds quite serious, but I’m sure it will retain the same sense of fun, and heist movie style that made the first Ant-Man such a blast. It’s probably also safe to say that the film will link in with Avengers 4 in some way, and also explain what Scott was doing whilst the rest were getting their asses kicked by Thanos.

We reckon hanging out with his best bud Arrow Guy!

Will there be more films after Ant-Man and the Wasp?

Until we see what happens with the as yet untitled fourth Avengers movie, it is hard to predict what the future will hold for many of our favourite MCU heroes. That being said, there has to be some of them left alive in Phase 4, and I reckon Ant-Man has done enough to earn himself a trilogy.
