Gleeās sixth and final season is due to air this autumn as the former McKinley High students wrap up their stories and bid farewell.
If you havenāt seen season 5 of Glee then we suggest you stop reading now so we donāt spoil anything for you. If you have seen it continue reading to find out what we want from the showās final season.
Over the past five years Glee has gone from being one of the top rated shows on FOX in the US to one of the lowest rated. To put it into perspective the show used to draw numbers in the 10-12 million range whereas season 5 struggled past 5 million and ended with less than 2 million. The showās under-performance has led to rumours that the sixth season will be cut from 24 episodes to only 13.
However long we have left with Glee we want the show to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. Weāve compiled the 10 things we want to see in the showās final season.
1. Re-focus on the original characters. The show started to do this in the final episodes of season 5 but the final season needs to be all about the core characters. Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Mercedes (Amber Riley), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie (Kevin McHale) were the characters we fell in love with in the first season so we want them to get plenty of screen time as their journey comes to an end.
2. Closure for the new characters. We donāt want characters such as Marley (Melissa Benoist) and Ryder (Blake Jenner) to have a huge focus in the final season but it would be nice to give them an episode where we see where they are and what theyāre up to. The characters just vanished from our screens once the Glee club disbanded doing a disservice to them and viewers who had grown to like them.
3. Klaine to get a happily ever after. The writers have done everything they can to put conflict into the relationship of Kurt and Blaine (Darren Criss). Season 5 saw them driven apart by being in the same city, Blaineās random (and fleeting) acquaintance with porn and wealthy benefactor June Dolloway (Shirley MacLaine). Isnāt it time they got back to being engaged and planning their future together?
4. Brittana. Santana was absent from our screens in the season 5 finale amidst rumours that actress Naya Rivera had angered producers and rowed with cast mate Lea Michele (something which has been denied). That left an odd situation with Brittany (Heather Morris) hanging around with no Santana in sight. In season six we want to see Brittany and Santana together again and happy.
5. Better treatment for Puck (Mark Salling) and Quinn (Dianna Agron). These two characters were part of the originals but their involvement in the show has diminished considerably with Agron allegedly purposely excluded from the tribute to Cory Monteith. Puck and Quinn were last seen mid season 5 and weād like to see them back at some point in the season and reintegrated with the core group.
6. Better consistency with storylines. Glee has always been a show that runs at such a frenetic pace that stories are picked up and abandoned in quick succession. Thereās a lot of inconsistency for example Rachelās dream throughout the show has been to star on Broadway but somehow once she achieves that sheās quickly bored and wants to be a TV star. It makes little to no sense and the writers arenāt staying true to their characters. In the final season we want stories that actually lead somewhere with a satisfying arc and conclusion.
7. Redemption for Rachel. We donāt know what happened in season 5 but the showās writers made Rachel incredibly unlikeable at points. Sheās always been a bit of a diva but her behaviour in season 5 was plain awful as she came across ungrateful and selfish. Now sheās got her own TV show we want to see her reconnecting with the Rachel she used to be and honouring Finn (Cory Monteith) by following her dreams making him proud.
8. Mr Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). The two characters fell by the way side when Sue ended the Glee club. We donāt want her to win and we want to see Mr Schue reignite his passion for leading the schoolās misfits with music. Sue has to finally get her comeuppance in the final season doesnāt she?
9. A guest appearance by Adam Lambert. Like we said earlier we donāt want the final season to stray from the focus of the main characters but Adamās Elliott āStarchildā Gilbert made a big impression with fans only to be written out as soon as Blaine arrived in New York. Perhaps he could come back as a wedding singer for Klaineās big day?
10. Memorable songs. This was always going to be a problem at some point but there were too many times in season 5 where we had no idea what the characters were singing. We miss the earlier seasons when the characters sung well-recognised songs that stayed with the viewer.
Glee is due to return in the US for its sixth and final season this autumn. Transmission in the UK is expected to follow shortly after.
