Crystal Dynamics unveils Rise of the Tomb Raider

0

Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, has announced its latest title in the Tomb Raider series, Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game is due at the end of 2015.

In her first adventure, Lara Croft was forged into a true survivor, but she glimpsed a deeper, secret world. In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider.
With the power of the new generation, and our proprietary Foundation engine, our high octane action moments will be even more epic. Multiple locations around the world will be filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth and over three times larger than we could achieve before. Our digital actors will rival CG quality, and after hearing the cry from our fans loud and clear, we will put the tombs back into Tomb Raider, all in our gritty survival-action style.
Rise of the Tomb Raider builds upon the formula that made Tomb Raider a success, and features the return of Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft. Camilla will take character performance to new heights as Lara pushes herself beyond human limits and is confronted with what it means to become a hero. Once again, Crystal Dynamics is proud to have the award-winning author Rhianna Pratchett as a key member of the writing team, helping craft a story that delves into Lara’s inner turmoil and motivations in this critical second act of her journey.

Echo Trails – Ode To The Familiar Strangers album review

0

Echo Trails is a five-piece band based in London via Cambridge. All band members’ have different musical backgrounds covering genres such as jazz, Greek, Eastern European and gypsy folk. Their debut album, Ode To The Familiar Strangers is self-produced and set for release this month. We had a listen and here are our thoughts.

All About The Cloudless Skies is up first. The track showcases various music instruments and obvious Kate Bush influences are there. The band makes interesting music combinations in its songs giving them interesting twists but also verging on the annoying and pretentious.

Weightless starts with a long intro, which again might feel a bit pretentious but we can see it working really well live. This is the longest track on the album and as such it takes a while to shape up. Unfortunately it takes too long and by the time Weightless has gained a bit of power we’re bored and need to move on to the next track.  For us it’s simply too long and doesn’t work.

Ode To A Familiar Stranger sounds aptly nostalgic and Dimitra has a beautiful voice accompanying it. Ultimately there is something a bit old fashioned about the track, that takes you back to the less good part of the nineties.

Echo Trails exotic influences are apparent on track, Hazy Horizons. We enjoy this song and its wild side. We can imagine this track being rather popular at folk festivals.

Echo Trails show their softer side on their sexy and heartbreaking ballad, Love Me & Leave Me. Dimitra has a stunning voice, which is both commanding and fragile and at times will remind you of Shakira’s.

Last but not least on the album is The Neurotic Eposodic, a vibrant track that ends the album with a high. The violin gives the song its gypsy folk sound and is the real star. The few vocals are refreshing and let the instruments rightfully shine.

Echo Trails’ debut album, Ode to A Familiar Stranger is distinctive and very folky. You can hear the band’s interesting musical backgrounds and passion, which is lovely. The tracks feel small on the album and sound like they would be more suitable for live shows and festivals. Sometimes music is just better live than on CD and this is one of these occasions.

Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection album review

0

What’s the biggest sporting event of the year you wonder? The world cup of course and to celebrate Studio Rio is releasing a compilation of classic tracks, which have been given a Brazilian twist. We had a listen and here are our thoughts.

First up is Bill Withers with Lovely Day and you are instantly hit by a blend of exotic rhythms. The samba version of Lovely Day seems to work and gives the song a completely different vibe.

Following this summery track is a bossa nova version of Aretha Franklin’s Walk On By. The track sounds nostalgic with its Brazilian influences but it works. From Aretha Franklin we move to Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing and we actually love how vibrant this version of the song is. Samba and Gaye are a match made in heaven. Sexual Healing sounds fresh and infectious and makes us want to hit the dancefloor.

Billie Holiday brings the mood down to a mellower level. You’ve Changed is filled with that nostalgic bossa nova sound, which we adore and can’t get enough of. There’s something insanely hot about Holiday’s vocals mixed with the sounds of the south.

There aren’t that many disappointing tracks on the album but there are. It’s Your Thing by The Isley Brothers is too powerful for the subtle sound of Samba and doesn’t really work for us.

Nina Simone’s voice will make any music sound wonderful and this includes Brazilian music. I Wish I Knew What It Means To Be Free is stunning as it is but with this twist it becomes a perfect summer track. Another track we love on this compilation is Take 5 from Dave Brubeck with Carmen Mcrae. We love the instrumental side to this track, which isn’t just background music but rather a layer of skin of the song.

Last but not least is the incredibly sexy song Summertime sung by Sarah Vaughan.

This blend of southern music instantly takes you miles away. If you seek escapism with a bit of familiarity then this is a great album We were skeptic but turns out Brazilian samba and bossa nova can pretty much revamp any track.
