Revisiting Jon Pertwee’s era of ‘Doctor Who’

Elisabeth Sladen is becoming the beating heart of the show

Planet of the Spiders

It’s hard to blame Jon Pertwee for wanting to leave after his five-year stint, but he left it in good hands, having increased its popularity. In Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah-Jane Smith, the show has a continuity into the era of the Fourth Doctor. Where she is sparkling, bright and dynamic in her first season on ‘Doctor Who’, she arguably responds to the next, younger and more dynamic Doctor even better. Although it’s sad to see the Third Doctor regenerate, knowing Sarah-Jane Smith is there to witness it and to guide us into a new era is a comfort. Was there ever a better companion or more faithful friend to the Doctor?
