Revisiting the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series in hi-def

The Baker Street set stands up well today as a superb recreation

In a series that delved into the details, the street where Holmes lives at 221b was important to get right. The studio sets, in reality just building facades, appear in the title sequence and in most of the episodes. For several years, they were open to the public as part of the Granada Studios tours. The passing of the decades renders the memories a touch hazy – I either visited two or three times. Sadly, we did not have a camera, so I have no photographic evidence that I, not once but several times, walked up Baker Street and stood at the door of 221b. I will never forget the thrill of those experiences, when I was in my early teenage years. Watching it now, I find it hard to believe that I was ever there, because the illusion is so convincing. I’m sure the enormous outdoor set cost a fortune to create and maintain, but given how long it was on screen for, it was money well spent!
