This is Jeremy Brett’s show
Much that David Burke and Edward Hardwicke do a sterling job, Doctor Watson is the supporting part, and a foil for the brilliance of Holmes. It is Jeremy Brett who truly captivates the viewer. High definition allows you to appreciate the depth and subtlety of his performance all the more. Every facial expression, mannerism and movement is timed to perfection. The result is the creation of a magnetic and compelling character you can’t take your eyes from. Sadly, we don’t see actors of Brett’s calibre these days. His precise diction (the result of compensation for an early speech impediment) may feel anachronistic to modern viewers used to mangled pronunciation, but his distinctive voice conveys an extraordinary range. Even when his performance is a theatrical it is truthful. The insistence on soap opera-style ‘naturalism’ has only encouraged mediocrity in the profession. Give me Brett’s rolling ‘r’s, wicked laughter, pursed lips and extravagant hand gestures any day!
