BBC Two‘s new political drama MotherFatherSon began last week and there was a lot to take in during the first episode.

The series centres around media mogul Max (Richard Gere), his ex-wife Kathryn (Helen McCrory) and their son Caden (Billy Howle). In the first episode Max paid a visit to the newspaper his son runs and it was evident that the father-son bond is very strained.

Caden struggled with the pressure of living up to his father’s expectations and being sent to deal with his mother’s potential headline-hitting relationship with a homeless man. He also angered Max when he asked questions during a meeting with political candidate Angela Howard MP (Sarah Lancashire), who the paper were planning to throw their weight behind.

By the episode’s end Caden had enjoyed (is that the right word?) a creepy and dominant sex session with a prostitute before having a stroke. He was left fighting for his life as Max and Kathryn looked on.

Read our full recap of episode 1 of MotherFatherSon.

With their son Caden (Billy Howle) fighting for his life in the hospital, we discover the story of Max and Kathryn’s (Helen McCrory) relationship, and their battles for control over the future of their son.
