Three Lions breaks records to reach Number 1 in the UK singles chart again

Ahead of England’s World Cup third-place play-off against Belgium, Three Lions, England’s football anthem, has charted at Number 1 in the Official UK Singles Chart. This is the fourth time the song has reached the top spot and this achievement places it in the Top 30 Best-Selling Singles of all time.

Originally released in 1996, the single hits the top of the charts again 22 years later, as England made it through to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the furthest the nation have progressed in the Cup since 1990.

When comedians and former presenters of Fantasy Football, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner teamed up with the Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie, they wanted to raise the nation’s pride in our national football team. The Lightning Seeds performed the song in Hyde Park on Wednesday night ahead of a special screening of the England vs. Croatia match.

Three Lions beat George Ezra’s single Shotgun to the top of the chart by over 3,500 sales. Earlier this week, Ezra publicly endorsed the campaign to get the football anthem back to Number 1. This week the also song made it to Number 1 on the iTunes chart and the Spotify UK chart, as well as the Top 5 in the Spotify Global Viral Chart.

England take on Belgium later today (14th July) at 15:00 BST in the third-place play-off. The match takes place at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg. UK viewers can watch the game live on ITV from 14:30 BST.
