Ray Donovan returned for a fifth season in the UK last night and it served up one hell of a shocker.

Ray (Liev Schreiber) was ordered to start attending therapy after a violent outburst in a bar ended up with various members of his family being hospitalised. While the full details of the incident were kept under wraps, it was revealed that Ray’s wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) had died with glimpses of what led to her death peppered throughout the episode.

We saw Ray and Abby involved in, but walk away from, a nasty car crash when they swerved out of the way of a half-naked woman on the street.

Abby’s death sent Bridget (Kerris Dorsey) spiralling and seeking out a man who knew her mother, but we don’t know what that relationship was yet.

Elsewhere in the episode it was revealed that Mickey (Jon Voight) was living with the Donovans, Terry (Eddie Marsan) had undergone an operation to try and control his Parkinson’s, Bunchy (Dash Mihok) tried and failed to become a wrestler, Conor (Devon Bagby) had enrolled in military school and mysterious and powerful new client Samantha Winslow (Susan Sarandon) hired Ray.

The next episode of the season is Las Vegas. A-list movie star Natalie James hires Ray to protect her from her abusive husband/manager, drawing him deeper into Samantha Winslow’s web.
