Madam Secretary 3×15 Break in Diplomacy preview

On the latest episode of Madam Secretary, Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) had to work to reunite a pair of star-crossed lovers whose union was at the heart of a Colombian peace deal after years of civil war.

At the start of the episode, the McCord household watched a news report about a new South American treaty. Juan-Luis Moreno (E.J. Bonilla), the son of the Columbian President, and Soledad Penagos (Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer), the daughter of the leader of the Resistance, had fallen in love. Their relationship had brought the country together and they were referred to as the Colombian Romeo and Juliet.

Elizabeth was called into work and her daughter Stevie (Wallis Currie-Wood) got a lift with her. At the office she found out that Venezuela wanted to back out of the treaty, despite Elizabeth’s best efforts at talking to them of the benefits the treaty would bring.

Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek) called Elizabeth in to meet President Moreno, the Resistance leader and their children Juan-Luis and Soledad. While things seem well between the young couple, there was a lot of tension between the parents that was on the verge of a big argument. Elizabeth tried to change to subject to their upcoming wedding.

Before dinner, the lovebirds held a press conference which went really well. Everyone then went to get ready but when Elizabeth and Henry (Tim Daly) arrived back at the White House everything had changed. Soledad had walked out on Juan-Luis and no one knew where she was. Without their relationship the peace treaty was doomed to failure.

Later, Stevie brought Soledad back to Elizabeth. She had been hiding her because she was having second thoughts on the marriage. Her backup plan was to stay in America to study medicine and she begged Elizabeth for help with the visa.

Meanwhile, Jay (Sebastian Arcelus) was having a rough time. After being kicked out by his wife Abby (Stephanie J. Block) he was convinced that she might be cheating on him. On suggestion of Blake (Erich Bergen) he checked her phone records and discovered an unfamiliar number that she was calling often.

He popped round to confront Abby and found that she had a brand new haircut. She was quite off with him and he felt it was a bad time so didn’t ask her. He later went out for drinks with Matt (Geoffrey Arend) and a friend called Scott (Patch Darragh). While Scott got the next round in, Jay called the mystery phone number and Scott’s phone rang.

Jay later found out that Abby had been talking to Scott for a few weeks as he was a good listener. There was nothing serious between them but Abby was open to the idea.

Jay wasn’t the only one having a bad day. Daisy (Patina Miller) was revealed to be dating Kevin (Justin Baldoni). He was the guy introduced last episode from the Budget and Planning Department. Things appeared to be going well for the pair and Daisy confided in Nadine that things were getting serious.

Later, Daisy went to Kevin’s office before their dinner date. She smiled to find him apparently asleep on the couch. When she tried to wake him she realised that he wasn’t sleeping, he was dead.

She called for medical assistance but he was already gone. It was explained to her that they thought Kevin had a congenital disorder that had caused a heart attack.

Elsewhere in the episode, Henry met with Ian Conroy (Darren Pettie) before he went undercover with the Covenant of John. Ian was confident but Henry was concerned. A GPS tracker was concealed in Ian’s clothing. His mission was to find the missing bomb.

Ian met with the radicals from the Covenant of John and Henry was listening in. Henry was impressed with the amount of effort Ian had put in and he seemed to convince the radicals he was the real deal.

They put a bag over his head and took him off to their compound. There they said it was time for him to prove his loyalty. The new recruits had their hands tied behind their backs and then were held underwater until they almost drowned. As it was Ian’s turn the water killed the trackers on him leaving his fate unknown.

To get the peace treaty back on track, Elizabeth recruited the help of Daisy and Jay. She sent Daisy to Soledad and Jay to Juan-Luis. They got them back to the White House where Elizabeth gave a moving speech. It worked and they agreed to work together and get the treaty back on track.

At the end of the episode, Daisy was alone at home watching TV when there was a knock at the door. She answered and was surprised to find the FBI serving a warrant to search her apartment. They also took her in for questioning.

Elizabeth was told what was going on and raced to see Daisy. She explained to her that Kevin wasn’t who Daisy thought. His real name was Joseph and he was working in the White House for the CIA as an undercover agent. The FBI were involved because they think he was murdered.

The next episode is A Break in Diplomacy. Elizabeth is shocked when the Philippines’ unconventional new president, Datu Andrada, makes a pass at her during their meeting.
