The Pearson family didn’t have a smooth Thanksgiving in the present or past storylines on the latest episode of This Is Us.
In the past Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) took a 6-hour road trip to see Rebecca’s difficult parents but encountered trouble on the way when they got into a car accident. Having to abandon the trip altogether, they rented a motel room for the night and started their own traditions with the kids.
In the present Kate (Chrissy Metz) flew to Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) after breaking up with Toby (Chris Sullivan) and following a scary experience on the plane she decided to have gastric bypass surgery, which she announced at the worst possible time.
Meanwhile Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) pushed Rebecca to tell Randall that she knew William (Ron Cephas Jones). Rebecca kept putting it off but Randall discovered the truth when he drove to William’s to retrieve some tapes and found a letter from his mother that she sent when he was 11. Randall returned to his home and confronted his mother publicly just before Kate’s arrival.
Elsewhere Kevin (Justin Hartley) invited Olivia (Janet Montgomery) to spend Thanksgiving with his family and he made peace with Miguel (Jon Huertas) by letting him participate in the family’s tradition of telling the story of Pilgrim Rick.
The next episode of the season is The Trip. Kate, Kevin and Randall head to their family’s cabin after a chaotic Thanksgiving. Randall looks to Jack for comfort. Olivia’s words drive a wedge between Kate and Kevin.
