Meryl Streep and Hugh Laurie get digs in at Donald Trump during Golden Globes

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last night at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California and one subject that was very much on people’s minds was Donald Trump.

With the controversial businessman and TV personality set to become President of the United States later this month, some of the attendees last night made their voices heard on the subject. Meryl Streep, who picked up the Cecil B. Demille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment, gave a tearful and heartfelt speech directed at Trump without even mentioning his name.

Meryl publicly called Trump out for his behaviour suggesting that it encouraged bullying among his supporters: “This instinct to humiliate when it’s modelled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence.”

She expressed horror at Trump’s apparent mocking of disabled New York Times journalist Serge Kovaleski, pointed out that Hollywood was made up of ‘foreigners’ and asked her peers and viewers to protect the free press.

Despite having lost her voice prior to the awards, Meryl made sure she was heard and ended her emotional speech by quoting her friend, the late Carrie Fisher.

Meryl wasn’t the only one using her platform to attack Trump. British actor Hugh Laurie, who won an award for his role in BBC series The Night Manager, referred to the Golden Globes as the ‘last ever’ ceremony citing that the awards have ‘Hollywood’, ‘foreign’ and ‘press’ in the title.

No doubt we’ll hear what Donald Trump has to say about these high profile criticisms and some outlets are already reporting that he’s expressed a lack of surprise labelling Meryl as a ‘Hillary supporter’.
