The Hunger Games smashes UK box office

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took a record breaking total of over 12 million over the course of the weekend.

Opening with Midnight Screenings last Wednesday, the movie sequel took an increase of 250% on the first instalment’s opening weekend (The Hunger Games took Ā£4.5 million in March 2012). The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has taken half of the original movie’s total UK box office gross already.

Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa comments ā€œWe are thrilled with the outstanding box office and audience response to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Katniss and the world of Panem has struck a chord with UK audiences and critics alike with results to substantiate that. We are looking forward to seeing where Mockingjay will take us next.ā€

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) ā€“ a competition that could change Panem forever.
