Nathan Frizzell interview

The second season of Bloomers is well underway and it’s safe to say we’re just as hooked as we were with the first season.

We’ve already brought you interviews with creator and star Matt Palazzolo as well as producer and star Fernanda Espindola. Today we bring you an interview with Nathan Frizzell who plays the adorable Ross in the show.

Nathan gave us an insight into what’s in store for Ross this season, talked about the relationship his character has with Joanna and more.

How are you today? Where does this Q&A find you?

Iā€™m super, thanks for asking. I am having a bowl of cereal and catching up on some sports news. Good start to the day.

Bloomers is back and the second season is under way. What can we expect from the new season?

Wellā€¦ expect more. Haha- how is that for vague? We were very happy to see that season 1 did so well, and because it did we were able to make the 2nd season bigger and better. Youā€™ll get to know the characters better (as well as meet some new ones), get fuller storylines. The creative team has done a really great job of emulating a full season of any tv show.

The latest episode, Instinct, was a very Ross-focussed episode with him getting grief from Lila. How was it to have an episode centred on your character?

From an actorā€™s standpoint, what more can you ask for? Itā€™s really great having the chance to do a lot with your character. Ross is just trying to make things go right in his somewhat turbulent life, and that is really fun to play. Also I really enjoy that Iā€™m getting the opportunity to interact with characters that I didnā€™t in the first season (Vaughn and Clarissa for example).

Last season we saw Ross and Joanna pining after one another and now theyā€™re trying to make a go of dating. What can we expect from their relationship this season?

It wonā€™t be easy, thatā€™s for sure. Nothing with Ross ever seems to be. The great thing about watching these two is that they really do care about each other, but they just have so many things working against them. It makes for some good comedy, and some not so funny moments as well. The struggle is going to be whether they can rise above it all and make it as a couple, or if theyā€™re going to just give up.

In what ways does Ross grow this season from the character we got to know in season one?

I definitely think Ross has gotten a bit of confidence from Joanna. He doesnā€™t take Lilaā€™s crap anymoreā€¦ or at least he tries not to. Heā€™s got more swagger because heā€™s got a lady that really digs him. Now, can he keep that confidence? Thatā€™s a different story.

The reaction to the showā€™s first season was really positive. What kind of feedback have you had from fans about your character?

Iā€™m pretty happy with the way people respond to Ross. Heā€™s an extremely likeable and relatable character just in the way heā€™s written, so the fact that people seem to be feeling that way about him means I must be doing something right.

How did you originally get involved with Bloomers?

Well Matt and I have been friends for a while. One day he approached me and asked if I was interested in creating our own project together. A web series, perhaps? He told me to think about what kind of role I wanted to play, so my mind started whirling with all kinds of things. Some smooth, young business hot-shot. Some mean trust fund kid. The total opposite of who Ross ended up becoming. But I think Matt made a wise decision to write Ross the way he did.

What is it like to be part of an ensemble cast? It seems you guys have a lot of fun making the show.

It is really great actually. Many times in this industry you show up, do your job and go home. Itā€™s a business. So itā€™s nice to be able to do fun work with people on both sides of the camera that I really enjoy and respect. Itā€™s not often you hang around on set even after youā€™ve been wrapped but many of us do that while filming Bloomers.

Would you like to continue with the show for a third season if the second proves to be successful?

Absolutely. The 2nd season was definitely a lot of work, but I would come back in a heartbeat.

What other projects do you have coming up this year?

Iā€™ve got a film called ā€œEndless Loveā€ making the festival rounds right now. We produced it for the 48 Hour Film Festival last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z02QGW5Iix8 -thatā€™s the link to the film if youā€™re interested in seeing a COMPLETELY different side of me. Iā€™m also writing and acting in a new sketch comedy show thatā€™s going to be announced soon. Staying busy, thatā€™s how I like it.
