British audio brand Majority is really making a name for itself with its affordable products that offer audio quality far superior to their price points. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to test out a number of Majority products and I was excited when I got the opportunity to try out the Majority D100X Bluetooth Speakers. When they arrived, I was actually surprised at just how small they were and wondered how powerful they could possibly be.
After unboxing the speakers, the first thing I noticed is just how well-designed they are. These speakers are the perfect size for your bookshelf, as the name suggests, and they’ll also easily blend into your surroundings. They don’t look bulky and at less than 30cm in height, you can place them in the smallest of spaces in your room. Set-up of the speakers was remarkably straight forward – they come packaged with a speakers connecting cable and a power cable, and honestly you just plug these in, flick the switch on the back and the speakers work.
Using the accompanying remote, which is compact and lightweight, you can press the ‘Source’ button to select your input. I imagine that most people will want to take advantage of the Bluetooth mode (the speakers feature Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity with a 10m range), and honestly that’s the biggest draw here, but there are plenty of other options too including USB, Optical, HDMI Arc, Audio In and Phono inputs. Connecting a device by Bluetooth takes seconds and as soon as the song plays, you’re hit by the impressive sound. On the side of one speaker there are dials for volume, treble and bass, enabling you to perfect the sound for the type of music you’re listening to.
For testing purposes, I cycled through a few different styles of music to see what the speakers could do. Bad Bunny’s ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ sounded fantastic, with the bass really elevating and rounding out the sound of the uptempo Latin banger, while Nick Jonas’ gospel-inflected ballad ‘Sweet For Me’ sounded incredibly clean and crisp. Seeing how the speakers could handle the gentle Country of Larry Fleet, I was impressed at how his song ‘Baseball on the Radio’ sounded so immersive. Honestly, I couldn’t find a style of music that didn’t sound good on these speakers.
It's not just music that you can use these speakers for – you can use one of the other ports (such as HDMI Arc or Optical) to connect them to your TV or Blu-ray player. The speakers work very well in this set-up, giving you a significant sound boost over your TV’s internal speakers. They aren’t quite as effective as a soundbar but they offer superb quality if you’re looking to upgrade your system on a budget.
The speakers come with a built-in energy saving mode. If you forget to turn them off, they will automatically default to Standby Mode saving you energy. This is a really nice feature and it’ll appeal to those of you who are conscious of their energy use, and looking to keep your costs low.
The main downside of the Majority D100X Bookshelf Speakers is that even at the lowest volume, they are still fairly loud. It would have been nice to be able to have a lower volume but I imagine that’s not going to be a concern for most people that want to add these speakers to their home. Just be aware if you live in a flat or a semi-detached or terraced home, that the sound from these may well travel. There is a headphone jack, so you could opt to use that if you’re worried about disturbing the neighbours.
The Majority D100X Bookshelf Speakers are truly impressive. Offering incredible sound along with a lot of flexibility for device connection, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that comes close in this price range (the speakers retail for £129.95). I was seriously impressed and I know that I’m going to get a lot of use out of them over the coming months (and hopefully years). My recommendation would be to get a pair of these for your home office, and I promise you that you’ll thank me.
