The life and music of country music legend Loretta Lynn will be brought to the stage in a new musical, ‘Coal Miner's Daughter,' starring Tony Award-winning actress Sutton Foster. The production is currently in development under the direction of Tony Award winner Sam Gold, with music production by Jeanine Tesori. Gold and Tesori previously collaborated on the Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home.
Inspired by the acclaimed 1980 film and Loretta Lynn’s autobiography, ‘Coal Miner's Daughter' will chronicle her journey from humble beginnings in rural Kentucky to becoming one of country music’s most influential figures. The stage adaptation will feature some of her most beloved songs while also exploring parts of her life story that extend beyond the film’s timeline. Lynn’s daughter and longtime manager, Patsy Lynn, along with her adviser, Nancy Russell, will serve as consulting producers.
Loretta Lynn’s six-decade career left an undeniable impact on country music. Selling over 45 million records worldwide, she earned multiple Grammy Awards, Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Known for her fearless storytelling and songs that captured the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, she released iconic hits such as ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,' ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough,' and ‘The Pill.' She passed away on October 4, 2022, at the age of 90, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
Lynn’s family has expressed their excitement and gratitude for the production, noting that this was one of the last creative projects she was passionate about. “We are so grateful to see that our mother's life story and music will continue to touch the hearts of audiences and remain an important statement of the American dream,” the family shared. They also revealed that Lynn had the opportunity to witness Sutton Foster’s portrayal and believed she was the perfect fit for the role.
The musical is being produced by a team of Broadway veterans, including Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, Bee Carrozzini, and ATG Entertainment.
The 1980 film adaptation of Coal Miner’s Daughter received widespread acclaim, earning seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Sissy Spacek won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Lynn, and the film was honored by the Golden Globes, the Academy of Country Music Awards, and the National Film Preservation Board.
