Since capturing hearts across the country with his win on American Idol in 2022, Noah Thompson has taken the long road to defining his sound — and with his new EP ‘Kids Like Me,' that journey reaches a powerful milestone. Across six deeply personal tracks, Thompson sheds the last traces of reality show polish and delivers a raw, honest portrait of small-town struggle, loss, resilience, and growth. It's not just a musical step forward — it's a statement of intent.
The title track, ‘Kids Like Me,' sets the tone with autobiographical grit. Co-written with Luke Preston and Blake Chaffin, it reflects on a generation forced to grow up too fast, trading innocence for survival in fading hometowns. “So what we grew up too fast / We know how to spray paint brown grass green” is more than a lyric — it's a defiant mantra. ‘American Dream' follows with unflinching realism, painting a devastating picture of the broken promises behind that dream — addiction, financial strain, unhealed trauma. It’s a far cry from Nashville gloss, and that’s what makes it land so hard.
On ‘Demons in My Whiskey,' Thompson channels personal tragedy into haunting beauty. Inspired by a close friend’s death and released in tandem with national recovery efforts, the song is a chilling, heartfelt meditation on the slow unraveling caused by addiction. ‘Upbringing,' his first release as an independent artist, acts as a bridge between pain and purpose. It’s introspective and somber, but it also signals the emotional clarity that now shapes his music.
‘What You’re Made Of' provides a rare lift, offering an upbeat anthem rooted in strength and resilience. It showcases the balance Thompson strikes so well — a warm, soulful delivery that never veers into sentimentality. The final track, ‘Here Lately,' closes the EP on a deeply introspective note. Co-written with Nick Columbia and Lukas Scott, the song explores the feeling of being lost and slowly finding a way back. It’s vulnerable and heartfelt, the kind of closer that lingers.
‘Kids Like Me' proves that Thompson is more than an Idol winner — he’s a bonafide artist with stories to tell and the voice to tell them. This EP marks a turning point in his career, one where he fully claims his identity and shows what he’s truly capable of. With raw songwriting, soulful vocals, and unflinching honesty, ‘Kids Like Me' is Thompson’s strongest work to date — and the clearest sign yet that he’s just getting started. He makes his Opry debut on May 31st and, similar to Carrie Underwood who asked him to clear that date, we hope it is the first of many more to come.
