Frequent readers of EF will know that we’ve been following Maluma aka Juan Luis Londoño Arias for quite a while now.
The 25-year-old hails from Medellín in Colombia and he’s the biggest star in Latin music right now. Amazingly there are plenty of places where people are only hearing his name for the first time and that’s thanks to his collaboration with Madonna on Medellín.
He started making music when he was just 15-years-old in 2009. His track picked up steam and it saw Maluma attracting the attention of Sony Music Colombia.
Maluma released his debut album Magia in 2012 and the album’s sixth and final single was his first major hit, landing at number 2 in Colombia. The buzz surrounding the young star only increased from that point with the release of PB.DB. The Mixtape in 2015 and he had his major breakthrough shortly after with Borró Cassette, the first track from his second album Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy.
That album became his first number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and as his ascent continued, Maluma teamed up with fellow Latin superstar Ricky Martin for the huge hit Vente Pa’ Ca.
Collaborations are something that have been at the heart of what Maluma does and over his career so far he’s had three huge hits with Shakira – Chantaje, Trap and Clandestino – and he’s worked with the likes of Flo Rida, Yandel, Prince Royce, Anitta and Becky G.
While Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy blasted Maluma into the mainstream, it was the release of third album F.A.M.E. that took him to the next level. That record has been certified 6x Platinum in Latin America and spawned the hits Felices los 4 with Marc Anthony, Corazón featuring Nego do Borel, and El Préstamo.
In support of F.A.M.E. Maluma embarked on an extensive world tour, which saw him perform to a near sold-out show at SSE Arena Wembley in London last September. As a live performer he’s magnetic, putting on one of the best shows that we’ve ever seen.
With new album 11:11 on the horizon, Maluma is continuing to build on his success. Mala Mía, the album’s lead single, has already been a smash in the charts and follow-up HP is another Top 10 hit for the superstar.
Today Maluma has released La Respuesta with Becky G, just days after he featured on Madonna’s new track Medellín.
Proving himself to be incredibly prolific, as well as super-talented, Maluma could well be on the verge of breaking into the mainstream global market. The collaboration with Madonna will help him garner attention but it’s his talent that’s going to see him soar.
