Interview: Emin talks about his experience working with Robin Schulz

Russian pop star Emin, is teaming up with German DJ Robin Schulz for his latest single, Let Me Go. The Russian artist has previously collaborated with the likes of Chic’s Nile Rodgers, David Bowie, Cher, Kylie Minogue, and Lionel Richie. In 2017, Emin performed for an audience of 50,000 people a Palace Square in St Petersburg, becoming the third person ever to play there after Paul McCartney and Madonna. I catch up with Emin to talk about his new single and latest collaboration with German superstar DJ, Robin Schulz.

Hi Emin, how are you today and where does this Q&A find you?

Really great thank you. I’m with my band today rehearsing our live set so it’s a great day!

Could you tell me how your new single, Let Me Go came to be? What was the inspiration behind it?

The writing of it came about organically in the studio. I think the subject is something that everyone can relate to.

Could you tell me how the collaboration came about?

As we were in the studio writing and demoing the song, it felt as if it had a Robin Schulz type vibe to it. So we sent it off to him and fortunately he loved it and wanted to collaborate. We couldn’t be happier with the result.

What is key to a successful collaboration?

For me its a musical connection and just a great vibe.

How does your creative process work?

For me everything starts with the song. If the music is great everything unfolds from there.

What do you think influenced the sound of the remix?

Robin took the song to another level!

How did you get into music and what attracted you to the dance scene?

It all started with a love for Elvis actually. And from there I experimented with all styles, but they all have their roots in pop. As I’ve grown older I’ve leaned more towards a modern sounding, contemporary pop which has progressed in this case to pop/dance which was where Robin came in.

What are your plans for 2019?

We’ll be putting out another couple of singles for sure, and we’re working on another fantastic collaboration. I’m continuing to develop my radio station, my music channel and the Zhara festival. And we’re also launching a fresh, cool energy drink called Zhara which is really exciting.

We’re also getting ready for the Russian leg of the ‘Good Love’ tour. It’s got the best of what I’ve got; my full band with horn section and percussion, it’s going to be awesome and we’re all really excited and looking forward to it. Festival Zhara is going to be the biggest music event of the year in Russia and CIS so you don’t want to miss that!
