Tetris 99 available now on Nintendo Switch

Tetris was first released way back in 1984 and has managed to maintain its status as a gaming classic for all of that time. It has been reimagined and copied over and over but the lure and satisfaction of getting your blocks all in a row just never goes away. Tetris 99 is yet another new spin on the game and this time somehow manages to incorporate a battle royale element.

When you think of battle royale games your mind would probably jump straight to Fortnite, Apex Legends or PUBG but now you can add Tetris 99 to that list. Whilst there isn’t any gunplay or fort building there is still plenty of competitive action to be had.

The premise is quite simple. 99 players start and only one emerges as the winner. To begin with this looks like normal Tetris but Tetris 99 has a devious twist. As you complete your rows of blocks you can use them to attack other players. These blocks then appear on an opponents game board filling it up and making it even harder for them. Tetris can be tough at the best of times when dealing with your own poor decisions and an unlucky run of blocks but throwing this mechanic into the mix makes for a truly exciting and no doubt frustrating experience.

The thing that keeps players coming back for more, or for myself at least, is that victory can always be just one more game away. ‘I’ll win in the next one’ I tell myself as I limp home with a poor finishing position, and God help me if I finish in the top 3, ‘I almost won’ I foolishly tell myself and boot up for another run.

Tetris 99 is available for free for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
