Christmas Movies A to Z – B: Black Christmas

Our Christmas Movies A to Z continues and for B we have some a little different… the 1974 film Black Christmas.

Starring Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet), Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey), Margot Kidder (Superman) and John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Black Christmas tells the story of Jess Bradford (Hussey) and her sorority sisters who stay in their house over Christmas. Unbeknownst to them, a serial killer is hiding in their attic and he starts picking them off one by one.

Written by A. Roy Moore and directed by Bob Clark, Black Christmas is one of the best slashers ever made and it’s very, very effective. There are plenty of great deaths, lots of jumpy moments and a fantastic story.

There aren’t too many horrors set at Christmas and there’s no reason why horror fans should be left out of the holiday season is there? If you haven’t seen this, you need to add it to your watch list immediately.

The film is available on Dual Format (DVD and Blu-ray) and Digital Download.

Alternatives…

The remake of Black Christmas, which came out in 2006, is surprisingly good. It’s not a patch on the original but it’s cast – Katie Cassidy (Arrow), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Oliver Hudson (Scream Queens) and Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls) – do a solid job. There’s also home invasion movie Better Watch Out, starring Olivia DeJonge (The Visit), Levi Miller (Pan) and Ed Oxenbould (The Visit) that should get the adrenaline pumping.

Come back tomorrow to find out what our choice for C is…
