The Hatton Garden Job review

The infamous Hatton Garden robbery from April 2015 gets the big screen treatment in Ronnie Thompson’s fun and engaging heist caper, which coincidentally gets a theatrical release over the same Easter weekend as the robbery took place, just 2 years ago.

Matthew Goode stars as the mastermind behind the job, who is pulled between his obligations to the high-powered head of a crime syndicate (a quite brilliant Joely Richardson) and East London mobster Stephen Moyer. Banding together a group of aging legends from back in the day (Phil Daniels, Larry Lamb, David Calder and Clive Russell), the gang attempt to pull off the heist of the century over the long weekend – a job which throws up a few surprises along the way.

Classics like Ocean’s Eleven and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels are a clear influence here. It doesn’t reach those highs, but it certainly tries to deliver an entertaining ride all the same. Director Ronnie Thompson’s vision feels like a 90’s throwback (in a good way), utilising a lot of the tropes that made those heist films so special.

The Hatton Garden Job’s best asset though is its cast, who all club together to deliver some fun moments. Leading the line is Matthew Goode, who is brilliant as the man with the grand plan. Larry Lamb and Phil Daniels are always worth your time, TV legend David Calder delivers and Clive Russell provides some nice comic relief touches. As mentioned earlier, Joely Richardson is excellent but could have been used more onscreen, as could True Blood favourite Stephen Moyer. Mark Harris makes for a great boo-hiss villain as a bent copper named Frank Baskin.

The Hatton Garden Job is a lot of fun and engages its audience well. It won’t win any awards but it does the basics right and cultivates a great cast dynamic. Plus any film that features London as a star gets my vote. The story is also dramatic and quite remarkable, which keeps the viewer invested. The heist film will always be a decent bet at the box-office and The Hatton Garden Job proves that you can still do it in an engaging and entertaining way.
