Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and William (Ron Cephas Jones) met in the present day on the latest episode of This Is Us but it wasn’t for the first time.

After making a surprise visit to Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) with Miguel (Jon Huertas), Rebecca was shocked to find that William had been staying in the house. Asking for a moment in private with him, Rebecca confronted William about the deal they made years earlier that he would stay out of Randall’s life.

In the past storyline Rebecca saw William outside the hospital as she was leaving to go home. When Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) took the babies for a check-up at the hospital, Rebecca sought out William after feeling disconnected from Randall who she had originally named Kyle. After meeting William she asked him to stay away from them so she could raise Kyle as her own and on his suggestion she renamed him Randall.

Elsewhere in the episode Toby (Chris Sullivan) treated Kate (Chrissy Metz) like a star for the day and was upset when she ditched him in favour of her brother Kevin (Justin Hartley), who had decided they were both moving to New York so he could pursue a career in theatre. Realising that he was taking up too much of Kate’s time, he sacked her and went to New York on his own. Kate meanwhile apologised to Toby and slept with him.

Randall took William to the hospital for a check-up and found out his father didn’t have long left. He decided to start asking questions about his mother in a bid to get to know William better in the short time they had left together.

The next episode of the season is The Pool. Rebecca and Jack take their children to the swimming pool on a hot day. Kevin auditions for his first Broadway play. Toby and Kate bump into Toby’s ex-wife at a restaurant.
