The X Factor 2016 final recap

After weeks of relentless competing The X Factor 2016 contestants 5 After Midnight, Saara Aalto and Matt Terry are singing in Wembley Arena in the hopes of being crowned this year’s winner. Judges, Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Scherzinger, Louis Walsh were supporting their remaining finalists and Simon Cowell joined them.

The night included a live performance from ex-One Direction member, Louis Tomlinson with Steve Aoki. The performance was beautiful and heartbreaking. Also performing tonight was American superstar, The Weeknd.

The most controversial X Factor contestant this year, Honey G also graced us with her presence singing a medley of her best performances on the show.

5 After Midnight

The song: Crazy In Love РBeyonc̩

Our verdict: The boys were in good form tonight kicking things off with a bang! I thought the song choice was ambitious but it worked thanks to some good harmonies. It was a fantastic way to open the night. I wasn’t a fan of the trio’s outfits though.

The comments: Nicole and Sharon said that there was a lot of energy coming from the stage. Simon said it was a fantastic performance and mentor Louis added that they deserved to be there and win.

The song: Tears – Clean Bandit featuring Louise Johnson

Our verdict: 5 After Midnight did something really clever for their duet with Clean Bandit and last year’s X Factor winner, Louisa Johnson, by not dancing the boys focused on their vocals, which sounded better than ever. It was a brilliant performance and I loved every moment of it. The boys looked like stars.

Matt Terry

The song: Take Me Home – Jess Glynne

Our verdict: Matt started off slow and not as confident as other nights but he turned it around and really showed off how good a singer he is. I thought he finished the song on such a high and made me teary.

The comments: Louis commented that every week he delivered and was consistent. Sharon added that she loved the drama and was happy to see him at the final. Simon said the song was perfect for him but was distracted by the dancers. Mentor, Nicole said that she was moved by Matt, who she called the golden boy with a golden voice.

The song: Purple Rain – Prince

Our verdict: Matt’s tribute to Prince was stunning. Nicole joined him on stage and the chemistry between the two singers was great and Matt really did shine. I thought that maybe Nicole was a bit over the top but in the end it looked beautiful.

Saara Aalto

Thames / Syco Entertainment

The song: Everybody Wants To Rule The World – Tears for Fears

Our verdict: I was curious to see what Saara would do tonight and wasn’t disappointed. The Finnish finalist came a long way but what an amazing journey she’s had on the show. Saara really pulled it out of the bad with her dramatic performance. I wasn’t a huge fan of the song’s arrangement as I don’t think it did Saara’s vocals justice.

The comments: Louis commented that he’s always been a fan of hers and that she was an incredible artist. Nicole added that she had second thoughts over picking her as her wildcard and that she had an amazing voice. Simon also thought it was brilliant and that everything else was incredible. Mentor, Sharon added that she was spectacular.

The song: Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

Our verdict: Saara was bold tonight and really decided to push herself! Her performance was outstanding and only complimented by Adam Lambert’s perfect vocals. Choosing such an iconic song to sing with someone else was risky but might just pay off.

It was the end of the road for 5 After Midnight, who cast the least votes. Tomorrow night Saara Aalto and Matt Terry will take the stage one final time and one of them will be crowned the winner of this year’s show.

The Factor 2016 winner will be revealed tomorrow night at 8pm on ITV.
