Skye | Ross interview

Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey have formed new duo Skye | Ross and today they’ve released their self-titled debut album.

Having both release solo projects outside of Morcheeba, Skye and Ross decided to try something new and collaborate together. The duo will embark on a series of UK dates starting on 30th October in Birmingham, taking in Bristol, Brighton, London and finishing in Manchester on 4th November.

I caught up with Skye to find out more about the new project, discuss the duo’s debut album, and find out if Morcheeba is likely to make a comeback in the future.

Hello and welcome, how are you both today?

I’m in agony at the moment suffering from sciatica. We travelled from London to Italy to Tblisis via Istanbul to Hungary back to London. The gigs were amazing and I had lot of fun but my body is wrecked.

You’ve been busy touring various festivals lately, having fun? Any stand-out moments?

We recently performed at the Festival Of The Vally in Kapolcs, Hungary. It was by far the craziest Skye and Ross show ever. Jurassic sized flying bugs, thunder and lighting, gale force winds, torrential rain and stage invasions by a half naked man! It was absolute chaos and I loved every minute!

You release your new album today. What were your hopes before you started to make the songs for the album?

Ross and I originally thought we would create a mellow acoustic album but as the songs developed some of them were crying out for more elements like live drums and guitar or Hammond solos, so we let the songs lead us.

What goes through your mind on the week of the album release?

The release date sort of creeps up on me. I don’t sit around worrying about it. The release date is September 2nd so around that time we’ll be coming towards the end of our US tour. I’ll also be thinking about buying my 8 year old son new school shoes and new school uniform as he’ll be entering into year four.

Having worked together for so long, does working on various projects (Skye – with the release of your solo albums and Ross with Little Mountain) help to keep your working relationship fresh?

We’re very fortunate to be able to have our solo projects as well as working together. Things I’ve learned as a solo artist- composition of a song and compiling lyrical ideas- I’ve been to bring into the song writing process for the Skye|Ross album.

How does your album Skye | Ross compare to your work together as part of Morcheeba?

The main difference from previous Morcheeba albums is that Ross produced this record and I wrote the lyrics. (Paul was the lyricist and producer for Morcheeba). On the last couple of Morcheeba albums, the song writing process started with programmed beats. They had a hip-hop feel with the scratch DJ sounds and guest rappers. The Skye|Ross songs started with acoustic guitar and we also have live drums on some of the tracks. Paul hasn’t toured with us for well over a decade, so it’s an easy transition for us as far as the live side of things go.

Your new single is Light Of Gold, can you tell us what the story behind the song is? We heard your shot the video in Croatia? How did the making of the video go?

For my 4th solo album In a Low Light, I curated a video with director Tom Merilion for my song called Said and Done. Ross really like the vid so I suggest we work with Tom for Light of Gold. Tom came up with the idea of basing the track around a young couple in love. We sent a message via all our social media sites and came across a cute pair from Sibinek called Sara and Daniel. Tom shot them in various locations around the city during the day right through to the evening at our show. I’m really excited to see all of the footage.

Your album has been quite the family affair, with quite a few family members taking part, what’s it like to work with them in the studio?

It’s really easy working with the family in the studio. My husband plays bass and my son is now our drummer. Ross’s wife is lovely and did some BV’s for us. It would be so nice if she could come on tour with us too. You’ll know her as the singer from the Morcheeba Dive Deep album.

What are you most looking forward to over the coming months?

I’m really looking forward to touring in America. I have a soft spot for the states as I grew up on American TV with programmes like Sesame Street and Start Trek.

Can we expect to see you starting to work on a new Morcheeba album in the next year?

Morcheeba is no more. So, no Morcheeba albums in the foreseeable future. Ross and I will of course continue to play all the favourite classic Morcheeba songs when we tour, like The Sea and Otherwise and Rome wasn’t Built In A Day.

Skye | Ross release their self-titled debut album today (2nd September 2016). Fans who pre-order the album will get Light of Gold, How to Fly and Medicine as instant downloads. Watch the video for Light of Gold below:
