Sausage Party review

The most outrageous film of the year arrives.

Get ready to wash your eyes after seeing this hilarious and (at times) gross and offensive comedy from the minds of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jonah Hill. A bunch of wiener-sausages in a supermarket patiently wait for their time to be bought, thinking that they are heading to the promised land. Little do they know that food is actually eaten by humans. So begins a frantic chase as they all seek to find out the real truth.

The true genius of Sausage Party lies with the concept – its breathtakingly original, with gags that poke a stick at anything you can think of – religion, world politics, race, gender, sexuality – it’s all up for grabs here (sometimes literally). The animation is also beautiful at times, which makes it all the more disturbing when things start to get X-rated!

The voice cast assembled is a who’s who of modern Hollywood comedy with Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd, Craig Robinson, Lauren Miller, Danny McBride, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Bill Hader, James Franco and Michael Cera just some of the household names attached. Throw in Salma Hayek as a bi-curious taco shell and Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel Jr. and you have some idea of just how crazy this all is.

The constant jibes at religion do get tiresome quickly, as does the obligatory Seth Rogen stoner segment that seems to be contractually attached to any movie he makes. But that aside, it still delivers a memorable story that has some big, bold ideas and isn’t afraid to use them, no matter who they offend. Some of the jokes are truly inspired and some of the gags are just lazy – it’s a shame that the early momentum of the film didn’t carry all the way through to the end. The ‘Saving Private Ryan’ scene depicting a war-zone of food is pitch-perfect though – if totally (and morally) wrong!

It certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste but there is no denying that this is the most original animated film you’ll likely see all year. Equal parts silly and genius, Sausage Party is an unforgettable experience that you do have to see to believe. The laughs slow down considerably as the film progresses but the end scene is just so gob-smackingly unbelievable, it’s almost worth the admission price alone.
