C2C: Country to Country 2016 – Maren Morris live review

25-year-old singer-songwriter Maren Morris was the second and final act to take to the Yamaha Music Stage for Day 2 of C2C: Country to Country. Following Sam Hunt’s main stage performance, Morris took to the stage with her guitar accompanied by a guitarist. There’s a lot of buzz around Morris at the moment with her single My Church getting a lot traction on both sides of the Atlantic.

Unlike the other performers on the stage, Morris performed only two tracks rather than three but she still made quite the impression. She opened her short set with 80s Mercedes and the first thing I noticed was the power in her voice; the girl can really sing and when she hit the powerful chorus she soared. Morris features the confidence of a performer more seasoned than her years.

The second and final track was of course My Church. A lot of the audience knew the track, thanks in part I’m sure to BBC Radio 2’s support of it. The acoustic set-up of the song worked to its advantage and it really focused your attention on Morris’ lyrics and her superb vocal. The song straddles contemporary and traditional Country, and Morris’ vocal is incredibly distinctive and confident.

It’s a shame that we didn’t get another song from Morris as the two she performed sounded incredible. She more than proved that the buzz surrounding her is justified and her debut album should be one that does very well when it arrives later in the year. Morris may have kept it short and sweet but she made a lasting impression on the UK audience.

Set List: 1. 80s Mercedes 2. My Church Performance Date: Saturday 12th March 2016
