Battlefield 4 gets free community-created map

For the past six months the developers at DICE LA and the Battlefield 4 community have been creating a new map called Operation Outbreak.

Battlefield 4 players participated in every step of the map creation process from the core concept such as theme and setting, to selecting the points of interest, and naming the map. Players provided feedback and suggestions on forums, and even voted in polls to shape the map’s outcome. Through the Battlefield 4 Community Test Environment, they also were able to try out the new map in various iterations from early scale tests to its final form. The result is a dense infantry-focused jungle map.

Here are some of the highlights from the community-voted polls:

Favoured setting
1. Jungle
2. Desert
3. Mountain

Top-voted points of interest
1. Waterfall
2. Ancient Ruins
3. Ghost Town

Preferred names
1. Operation Outbreak
2. Harau Falls
3. Ruins of Harau
Involving the players and letting them participate in the creation of a map from the ground up is something we’ve never done before. Seeing our player’s passion and dedication has been a great inspiration for us. When working with a very active community, releasing several updates to the map per week, we realised how powerful such a tight feedback loop can be.
Operation Outbreak is available from today as a free digital download on Origin for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, to all Battlefield 4 players. It will be included as part of Battlefield 4 Community Operations DLC.
