The Script – 02 live review

A superb concert from The Script at the 02 Arena.

The Script

The Script have been together as a band for almost fifteen years and in that time they have seen all of their four album releases going to the top of the charts. The band, consisting of lead vocalist/pianist Danny O’Donoghue, vocalist/guitarist Mark Sheehan, and drummer Glen Power have been busy touring the United States up until recently and are glad to have them back in the UK/Ireland! Last night’s show was their first show in London in over 2 years and Danny has promised it won’t be so long until they are back again!

The night opened with the likes of Paint the Town Green and Hail Rain or Sunshine, from their latest album, No Sound Without Silence. There wasn’t a soul in the entire arena who wasn’t singing along to Breakeven and it was a goose pimple moment, with Danny sounding powerful. What we love about The Script is that they take nothing for granted and their love of music and what they do shone through every song that they played. Their closeness as a band made the camaraderie and insider jokes was entertaining to see, as they powered through a setlist of amazing songs.

Superheroes, Man on a Wire and Good Ol’ Days provided some highlights mid-set and we loved how Mark added a funny story about the making of the video of Man on a Wire, where yes – Danny did actually walk that tight between those high buildings, it wasn’t camera trickery and Mark might have sat sitting in a corner crying, as he couldn’t watch Danny do it!

The band transitioned from the main stage and on to the smaller stage nearer the back of the 02, where we saw Danny on the piano, as the band performed Never Seen Anything “Quite Like You”, the amazing The Man Who Can’t Be Moved made the entire come alive and the clapping, roars and energy that arose from that song being played live was off the scale! The band had to actually take a moment and soak it all in, whilst appearing incredibly humble and grateful to the reaction that the song had. You Won’t Feel a Thing ended their three song stint around the piano, before it was time to make their way back to the stage.. by going on a bit of a walkabout with a selfie camera, as Danny made his way back to the main stage with the selp of a lofty security man, snapping photos of himself with the fans as he went.

Six Degrees of Separation is one of those songs made for nights where everyone comes together and has a mass singalong, with arms throwing high up in the air, with tons of energy and passion. We loved the quirky little quips between songs and the feeling that you were there in the moment, with thousand of others who felt the energy of the band wash over them and it made you feel alive. We also loved the fact that they threw in the ‘does anyone have an ex girlfriend of ex boyfriend who we can call up and embarrass?’, which they did on request of their twitter followers who keep asking them to put this in to their show!

The encore came only too quickly and the night flew by in a passion of music, energy and talent. Danny has been on our TV screens in recent years, as a judge on BBC.1’s The Voice, and after seeing them live, he is the perfect man for it – as boy, what an amazing voice he has! Even when he was running around the stage, or making his way back to the stage from the small stage and being grabbed by fans, his voice remained consistently fantastic, right until the very last song of the evening. The night closed with the fantastic Hall of Fame, complete with paper confetti explosion and fireworks. An amazing light show throughout the set added to the whole atmosphere in one of the best gigs that we’ve been to in a while. If you haven’t seen The Script live, you really must.
