Non-Stop Blu-ray review

Liam Neeson races against time in this high flying action-drama.

Air Marshall Bill Marks (Liam Neeson – Taken) mysteriously receives text messages during a flight saying that passengers will die every 20mins unless $150million in ransom is paid. With time running out, Marks must decipher just who is behind this act of terrorism before lives are lost.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra delivers a hugely enjoyable (if a bit ridiculous) and very entertaining blockbuster that checks all of the right boxes. In full popcorn-munching glory, Non-Stop is a great Saturday night movie, full of tension, action, suspense and even a few laughs along the way.

Liam Neeson continues to enjoy his renaissance as an action man and leads the line well. His character may be a tad clichéd, mainly due to a needless back-story involving a drinking problem and a broken family, but he still manages to keep things interesting. The action scenes are a particular joy with close-quarter fights utilising the restrictive environment of a plane cabin to good effect. Again, Neeson excels here with bone crunching fisticuffs that will have you cheering in the aisles.

Julianne Moore, who has worked with Neeson on projects before, brings a nice level of believability to her supporting role. The two share a wonderful chemistry and elevate the film up a few notches. Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery and 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’o are very capable air stewardesses so there’s plenty of acting quality onboard. But it’s Neeson’s gun-toting charisma that gets you through the flight.

In the same model as Speed and Die Hard, Non-Stop keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. The end may be bonkers but by that point you’ll just be having too much fun to care. With Neeson in full action mode it’s hard to go wrong here and this does keep you guessing until the very end – something of a rare commodity in Hollywood these days.
