Suits: Season Three DVD review

Suits is one of the most criminally under-rated shows on TV today. The legal drama has found a loyal following on both sides of the Atlantic but it doesnā€™t really get the credit it deserves. About to enter into its fourth season in the US, Suits is the perfect blend of comedy and drama making it incredibly watchable and very addictive. Season Three of the hit show is being released on DVD in the UK on Monday.

Suits: Season Three sees the show take a bit of a different approach with the first 10 episodes featuring an arc involving the case of oil company CEO Ava Hessington (Michelle Fairley). The season picks up right after the merger of Pearson Darby as Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) and Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) learn to deal with the presence of new partner Edward Darby (Conleith Hill) and his British team. Ava Hessington is a friend and long-time client of Edwardā€™s who finds herself accused of bribery and murder.

The focus on Avaā€™s case over the first 10 episodes is a refreshing change for Suits and makes season 3 the most consistent and thrilling yet. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, none of which weā€™ll reveal of course, and the case impacts on the entire season. On top of that case Mike has to deal with an increasingly suspicious Louis (Rick Hoffman) who is intent on finding dirt on him which threatens to expose his secret to everyone.

Elsewhere in the season Donna (Sarah Rafferty) gets a new love interest in the shape of Stephen Huntley (Max Beesley), Edwardā€™s right-hand man, Rachel (Megan Markle) and Mike adjust to becoming a couple, and Harvey has his hands full when his ex-girlfriend Scottie (Abigail Spencer) is thrust back into his life due to the merger.

One of the strongest aspects of Suits is its incredible cast. The dynamic between them is remarkable and that infuses the show with an energy that many other legal shows simply donā€™t have. Packed with witty one liners, Suits is led by the charismatic Gabriel Macht who is matched performance-wise by Patrick J. Adams. Gina Torres play the icy cool boss of the firm with relish whilst Sarah Rafferty and Rick Hoffman battle for scene-stealer status as Donna and Louis respectively.

We really liked the addition of former Mad Men star Abigail Spencer as Harveyā€™s old flame Scottie. She brings out a different side to Harvey and her chemistry with Macht is superb. Weā€™re glad she got given a bigger role in season 3 so we can get to know her character better.

Special features on the DVD release include deleted scenes, a gag reel and a cast commentary.

Suits: Season Three is the strongest season of the show yet. Thereā€™s plenty of drama, twists and turns as youā€™d expect and the season builds to a surprising finale that sets up a very interesting foundation for season 4. Youā€™ll have to watch the show to find out what that is. Weā€™re already counting down the days until Suits returns to our screens.
