Junip are the trio made of José González, Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn. The album is being released through City Slang and we had a listen.
The album kicks off with single Line Of Fire a mellow start with some interesting melodies. Gonzalez’s vocals give the track its dreamy quality but what brings it to life are the quirky sound effects. Line Of Fire is full of surprises though and gains more and more power until it reaches its climax. Suddenly picks things up where we left off with its haunting vocals and stunning melody. The track is also mellow and uses interesting sounds to keep the listener interested.
Giving the album a lift is So Clear with its brighter sound and a little edge. The track becomes quite dense and might feel a bit heavy for some but it also sounds like it would be amazing live. Villain also uses a distorted guitar and bass to give it that dirty sound and at just under 2 minutes the song feels like a good interlude.
Walking Lightly is the longest track on the album and also the most exotic sounding. The track feels like a journey with its beautiful accords and combination of melodies and although it should feel long it doesn’t.
Another interesting track on the album is Baton with its intriguing melody. We like the whistles on the track and its originality.
The album ends with After All Is Said And Done. This beautifully crafted ballad sounds like a haunting breeze, which becomes more and more animated before settle down again.
Junip are different and are happy to play music they enjoy. This album is not for the fainted hearted but for connoisseurs.
