Ashley McBryde is honoring the fifth anniversary of her acclaimed album ‘Never Will' with a powerful gesture of inclusivity. The Grand Ole Opry member has partnered with the Deaf Professional Arts Network (DPAN) and AmberG Productions to release American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations of three music videos from her sophomore album: the Platinum-certified ‘One Night Standards,' album opener ‘Hang In There Girl' and fan favourite ‘Martha Divine.'
The announcement was shared by McBryde on social media alongside her friend Kim Bryant, marking the initiative as part of National Deaf History Month.
McBryde began learning ASL after undergoing vocal cord surgery, which temporarily left her unable to speak. What started as a necessity evolved into a deeper commitment to accessibility. Throughout her 2023 tour, she began incorporating ASL into her live shows, striving to create a more inclusive experience for her deaf and hard-of-hearing fans.
In a recent conversation with Inked Magazine, McBryde reflected on her journey into ASL and accessibility. “It just became more and more apparent to me that one: I needed to learn more,” she shared. “And then I remembered we’ve got interpreters. And I thought it would be even cooler if I could thank the interpreters myself. And even better, can I thank my non-hearing and hard-of-hearing crowd? Because they’re there, or there wouldn’t be an interpreter. I want to thank them myself and say things like, ‘We see you, we’re happy you’re here, it’s nice to meet you, welcome to my show.’”
Released on April 3, 2020, ‘Never Will' received widespread critical acclaim. Variety called it “the pinnacle of what contemporary mainstream country can be,” Rolling Stone described it as “proof that she’s one of country's sharpest truth-tellers,” and Billboard noted the album's visceral emotional impact.
As McBryde gears up for a busy tour season, she recently performed her latest single ‘Ain’t Enough Cowboy Songs' at CMT Studios. The track has already received praise, with Stereogum calling it a “craggy and beautiful ballad” and American Songwriter hailing it as “McBryde in top form.”
