0

Country sensation Lee Brice joins forces with friends Nate Smith and Hailey Whitters for the release of their infectious singalong track, ‘Drinkin’ Buddies’, dropping today (April 26). Penned by Zach Kale, Chris Destefano, and Justin Wilson, and produced by Ben Glover and Jerrod Niemann, the song serves as a spirited tribute to the companions who make tough days easier and good times even better.

When Lee Brice isn’t captivating audiences in sold-out arenas or crafting hit songs, he’s cherishing moments with his wife Sara and their two boys and daughter. Alongside his music career, Brice has ventured into brand-building, including the creation of American Born whiskey.

With over 3.7 billion on-demand streams and 4 billion spins on Pandora, Brice enjoys monumental success across country radio, streaming platforms, and live performances. His recent track, ‘Memory I Don’t Mess With’, achieved Platinum status and topped the Country Radio charts, adding to his string of #1 hits including ‘One of Them Girls’, ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’, and ‘Rumor’. Recognized by the CMA and ACM, Brice has also earned a Grammy nomination and has seen nine of his singles reach the coveted #1 spot.

Notably, Brice’s songwriting prowess extends beyond his own performances, with artists like Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean, and Kenny Chesney recording his songs. His television appearances, including NBC’s Today and ABC’s The Bachelor, have further solidified his status as a country music icon.

Brice’s latest endeavour, the Me & My Guitar Tour, kicked off 2024 on an intimate note, and now, fans can anticipate fresh music with the release of ‘Drinkin’ Buddies’, a collaboration that promises to be a chart-topping hit.

Review: Charley Crockett skilfully treads the line between darkness and light on ‘$10 Cowboy’

Texas-born Charley Crockett has had a prolific career since releasing his debut album ‘A Stolen Jewel’ in 2015. With a further 11 records under his belt – most recently 2022’s critically acclaimed ‘The Man From Waco’, which saw him nominated for four trophies at the 2023 Americana Music Awards – he’s become beloved by fans for his blend of country, blues and Americana as well as his live performances. Now he’s back with the follow-up, ‘$10 Cowboy’, released today.

The 12-track project opens with the title song, a bluesy, funky number which highlights the depth and richness in Crockett’s drawl as well as honky-tonk piano runs. There’s a soulfulness to his delivery as he tells the story of Billy McClane, the ‘last of his breed’, and I like the blend of wryness and a sense of contentment with carving out one’s own path in. The spoken word section at the end, in which he talks about working his way up, is a really nice touch and it’s one I can see playing really well in a smoky, intimate club setting.

One thing which really stood out to me was the heavy soul and gospel influence that runs throughout the album. The atmospheric ‘America’ is an early highlight in this regard, with its layers of horn and sparse guitar melody as Crockett sings about trying to get by over jazz riffs and gospel vocalisations. He hits some absolutely massive notes and there’s a timeless, haunting quality to the song that makes it feel like a lost cut from the 1930s yet still relevant today. Elsewhere, ‘Gettin’ Tired Again’ put me in mind of classic Stevie Wonder songs with its delicate, shimmering melody that keeps it from feeling too dark, whilst ‘Lead The Way’ has a sparse, sultry vibe that pairs 70s-esque riffs with a pulsing drum beat and a wailing outro. There’s an edge to Crockett’s voice as he sings about following your heart and being true to yourself, but also a warning that life on the road may not be all it’s cracked up to be, and he does a great job of treading that fine line between darkness and light.

That said, there’s still plenty for fans of Crockett’s countrier sound to enjoy too. ‘Hard Luck & Circumstances’ is a twangy, mellow tune with a knowing lyric that stays the right side of melancholy as Crockett’s narrator accepts his lot in life, whilst ‘Good At Losing’ has a lush quality from its layers of strings and great tongue-in-cheek storytelling (‘most folks who talk about me have never lived a life like mine’). Meanwhile, the punchy, shuffling ‘Spade’ rattles along at a clip whilst immersing you in a story straight out of a classic cowboy film and ‘Ain’t Done Losing Yet’ has a rollicking, bouncy feel that seems like it was made for barroom singalongs – I defy you not to sway along to this one!

For me many of the highlights come in the slower numbers. ‘Diamond In The Rough’ sees Crockett show his soft side over a slow, organ-led melody with a sweet, heartfelt lyric about a woman who’s had it tough, and is full of warmth and tenderness. I also really liked the Eagles-esque ‘Solitary Road’, with its sharp drum rolls and lonesome, cinematic feel as Crockett warns the listener to avoid life’s temptations in almost hollowed-out vocals, and the hazy, smooth ‘City Of Roses’ which really captures a vivid sense of place and is packed with details throughout its tongue-in-cheek tale. If a song can be described as sepia-tinted, then this is definitely it.

The album closes with ‘Midnight Cowboy’, which sees Crockett telling the story of the title character rolling along through the night and the people he encounters. For me it ties the whole project together with its gliding vocals and chugging rhythm, as well as hitting that perfect balance of being both weighty and lively at the same time. It’s a tricky thing to pull off, but Crockett does it effortlessly and should absolutely be commended for that.

Overall ‘$10 Cowboy’ is a quietly hopeful record that shows Crockett’s strengths in blending country and blues sounds as well as his skills as a storyteller and great vocal quality. He has the great ability to bring the characters in his songs to life and a quiet command of his delivery that feels absolutely arresting on first listen. It’s music for a weekend morning drinking your coffee and contemplating life, and one that I can sense is going to work really well in live shows, especially smaller spaces. With songs to win over new fans as well as old, it’s another excellent body of work from him and should further cement him as one of Americana’s brightest stars.

‘The Drifters Girl – A New Musical’ at the Churchill Theatre

‘The Drifters Girl’ is a relatively new jukebox musical which is currently embarked on a tour of the UK. You can catch it this week at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley. It tells the story of Faye Treadwell, the manager of the chart-topping American soul group The Drifters, covering their rise to international stardom as well as the often tumultuous backstage events.

The story is a strong and captivating one. Faye Treadwell (sensationally played by Carly Mercedes Dyer) achieves what seems impossible. She guides The Drifters to the top of the entertainment industry in a world that doesn’t make it easy for someone both black and female. Mercedes Dyer is completely convincing in the part and plays Treadwell with feistiness. She also provides moments of vulnerability that ensure her character’s journey captures the audience’s hearts and minds from beginning to end. Her powerful and moving singing voice completes what is an impressive and memorable central performance.

Mercedes Dyer is well-supported in this highly enjoyable production. Playing her husband and confidante George is Miles Anthony Daley, whose chemistry with the leading lady is excellent. His rendition of ‘There Goes My Baby’ is one of the highlights of the night.

‘The Drifters Girl’ recounts the ever-changing roster of members of the group, long before the likes of the Sugababes endlessly changed the line-up but maintained the same name. In fact, who owns the rights to call a group ‘The Drifters’ is a question that is central to the plot, once former members become available for poaching to form an unofficial rival group. At one point, all of the members of the group are projected onto the screen to reinforce in the audience’s mind that there never really was a definitive line-up.

The musical brings to the foreground the memorable personalities of key members. Joining Miles Anthony Daley to provide vocals for the band is an equally talented cast comprising Ashford Campbell, Tarik Frimpong and Daniel Haswell. They all have their moments to shine. A standout for us was Ashford Campbell, who gets to sing ‘Stand By Me’ (Ben E King was a former band member who went solo). He is especially haunting as Rudy Lewis, a gentle but vulnerable soul. The energetic young cast has excellent comic timing and some playfulness with the dizzying array of characterisations provides welcome touches of levity.

If you like the music of ‘The Drifters’, then this production has their best hits sung by talented performers to the backing of a live band. That in itself is a joyous experience. You’ll hear ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’, ‘Under the Boardwalk’, ‘Save the Last Dance for Me’, ‘Kissin’ in the Back Row of the Movies’ and many other classics. The set design and lighting, which combine to produce abstract and adaptable staging, is another highly impressive aspect of this show.

Negative notes are much fewer, but the doubling or tripling up of parts is a mixed blessing. It allows the cast a lot of creative freedom, but it also requires the audience to remember who’s playing who from scene to scene. It’s probably the only way to do it without condensing the story too far, but nevertheless, it possibly asks a lot of the audience at times. Secondly, there’s a somewhat heavy-handed use of an expositional device to move the plot along. This results from using songs with lyrics that weren’t written to tell the story playing out on stage, as it’s a common feature of the jukebox musical. But with many costume changes and never much of an interval between songs, these minor grievances are allayed by a visually impressive production.

Overall, ‘The Drifters Girl’ is a great night out at the theatre. It has a strong central premise and is brought to life by a terrific and fully-committed cast. Be sure to catch this theatrical celebration of iconic music from the artistically transformative decades of 1950s and 60s. ‘The Drifters Girl’ is one of the best jukebox musicals we’ve seen, and this touring production is worth seeing for Carly Mercedes Dyer’s performance alone.

Interview: Mackenzie Porter on ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’, C2C memories and 2024 plans

It’s only April but 2024 is already shaping up to be a milestone year for Mackenzie Porter.

Alongside performing at the Grand Ole Opry and being announced as host of the 2024 Canadian Country Music Awards, she’s been working on her debut album, ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’, due for release this Friday. She also became a mum last month when she and her husband, fellow musician Jake Etheridge, welcomed their daughter Bowen.

Ahead of the album release I caught up with Mackenzie to chat about the project, her trip over to the UK for C2C last year, her recent headline tour in her native Canada, what the rest of the year looks like for her and more.

We last spoke just before you came over for C2C in 2023 – what’s been happening since then?

Oh my gosh, so much. I’ve recorded and have a record coming out. So I probably at that point was maybe like, just starting that process. I can’t remember. I probably had written a lot of it, but not like recorded it. So recorded it, we shot the album art, we shot all the videos. I got pregnant [laughs]. All the things, so it’s all happening at once.

What are your standout memories from that trip over here?

Yeah, I had come to visit just personally as a tourist. And then to come and play music was such a cool first experience. And, I mean, it was just a really beautiful thing to see, the fans over there. And they’re very different from the fans here, I think, like very attentive and in it. And that was so cool to see, like people just loving country music and really paying attention.

We’ve mentioned your debut album which is coming out this week – what can you tell us about that?

Yeah. So it’s called ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’. There’s 19 songs, we have six released already. And then I’ll have a couple more before the record drops. And it’s just time. I mean, I had all these songs kind of sitting in the chamber, like ready to go. And finally we were able to put them all together in one body of work.

Was it quite challenging to get down to those 19 songs?

Yeah, honestly, it was. I mean, we worked on that for a couple of months, probably just narrowing it down. And of course, we cut our favourites right away. And then when we got to the middle of it, we loved a lot of them, but not sure which ones. So it was kind of just like seeing what fit together, which made the most sense, like sonically, lyrically to all fit on the same project.

Is there a song for people you’re excited for people to hear – either live or in general?

So one that I’m excited for people to hear live is this one called ‘Rough Ride For A Cowboy’. It’s definitely a fun energetic song. I add this fiddle solo into it. It’s a good vibe live. And then one that I’m just excited for people to hear and listen to is called ‘Coming Home To You’. And it’s kind of like a love song on the record. But honestly, like, there’s so many on there. Like, I have a song called ‘Confession’ that I teased online, and people seem to love that one too.

Did you find any of the songs on the album particularly easy or particularly challenging in terms of the writing?

Oh, my gosh, I think ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’. That’s the title track on the record. I feel like that was pretty easy to write just because it’s definitely just my story. And I could just pull specific moments from my life. So I feel like that was pretty easy. And then challenging, let me think. I don’t know. They’re all challenging in a way, you know, like finding that hook. And that turn of phrase and country music that’s so popular. But yeah, maybe the emotional ones are always like, a little more challenging, like being really honest.

I did want to ask you about ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’. Why did you choose that one as the title track? And was it a significant thing for you to put it as the last song on the record?

Yeah, so I think that song like definitely embodies the whole record. Like, nobody’s born with a broken heart – we all start off so pure, and then we go through all these moments in life that maybe take a little chip away at our heart and all the songs are these little chips. And at the very end, it does have a turn of hopefulness, I guess, and I wanted to end the project like that. And that meaning now with me having a baby, it kind of turns into that. And so it’s kind of just where I’m at. I feel like it was the most wrapping up the whole story.

What did you learn from the process of making this album?

Oh my god, so much. Like patience [laughs]. Kinda like how to put a project together. I mean, to do everything from the sequencing to how long it takes to turn music in to streaming services, all of that. It was a lot of learning how to tell a full story with a body of work and not just have it like, ‘song song song song’.

And do you feel that the way you’ve approached your music has changed at all whilst you’ve been working on this project?

Yeah, I think so. I mean, we were so in the singles game before – just dropping singles, what we thought were like radio songs. And now I’m in the phase of, I want songs on there that will never be a single. But there’ll be like these deep cuts on the record that people hopefully will really connect with. And be able to show another side to my art other than just the more commercial side.

You recently played your first headline tour in Canada – how was that?

It was so fun. I mean, I’ve never played where just people would come just to see me. And you know, it was scary not knowing how many people are going to come or show up or buy tickets when you’re the draw. And to see that many people care and sing the lyrics and show up for me was very cool.

I also saw on your Instagram that you did some shows on a train at Christmas – tell us about that…

Yeah, so sweet. So basically, it’s just, the CP, Canadian Pacific Railroad, they go across the country, and you roll up to all these little towns and big towns and cities. And you play a set for them while they raise money for their local food bank. You play Christmas songs. It’s very sweet and wholesome and innocent. And you know, you’re raising thousands of dollars at the same time. And you live on the train, you play like four to eight shows a day. And it’s kind of like a little Polar Express vibe [chuckles].

The other thing I wanted to ask about was your Country vs Cancer concert in Nashville last year. Can you tell us a bit more about how that came about?

Yeah, so I played an event for a breast cancer fundraiser back, probably like 10 months before that. And then I met the head of ACS, the American Cancer Society, and kind of got to talking. My mom had breast cancer, so we were talking about my story and his work at the American Cancer Society. And eventually, we just kind of were like, “we should do something at some point together”. And so then they asked me to be the ambassador for the American Cancer Society, and said, “What do you want to do with that?” And I was like, “I would love to put on a concert”. I mean, that’s all I know how to do and raise money at the same time. So we did that. I asked a bunch of my friends like Walker Hayes, Dustin Lynch, Nate Smith, Alana Springsteen, Lily Rose. We put on a show and we raised $85,000 for the American Cancer Society. And we’re gonna do it next year, and hopefully raise more.

You also recently worked with Elijah Woods on the song ‘last girl’ – tell us a bit more about that…

Yeah. So they reached out to us, and they kind of were like, “hey, we want a country feature on this song. And would you want to work with Elijah?” I’m a big fan of his stuff. And the song was super cool. And just it was in the midterm of I had just put on a single but the project wasn’t ready. So it felt like a nice bridge to still have music come out. And yeah, it was a really cool thing to do with him.

Would you want to work together again in the future?

Yeah. I mean, he’s such a sweet guy, like super, super kind. And I think he’s really talented. So yeah, if he was into it, I’m into it.

I know you started out acting as well as with music. How do you feel that experience has fed into where you are now as a musician?

Yeah, I think it definitely makes me more comfortable on a video shoot in front of a camera. Even like doing stuff like this, I feel like interviews, it has helped me a lot. And just kind of let me get into entertainment and see some of the really beautiful things about the entertainment industry and some of the not so beautiful. I think acting really like gave me like a thick skin in the sense that you do 800 auditions and you hear it a million ways. You know why you’re not the right fit. And it kind of like gave me that hustle and grind that I now incorporate into my music career as well.

What does the rest of the year look like for you? You’ve got the new baby and the album – presumably those are the main focus?

[laughs] Yeah, dropping two little babies at the same time – an album baby and a real baby! No, but then after that, we’ll tour. So I’ll probably take a couple months off – like not off but just stay in Nashville to get her healthy and growing. And then we’ll start touring in the summer. I have a bunch of dates in the summer and then heavily in the fall.

And lastly – do you have any plans to come back to the UK soon?

Yes, I would love to. I don’t have anything booked at this exact moment but I had the best time and so definitely I will be coming back over.

Mackenzie Porter’s debut album, ‘Nobody’s Born With A Broken Heart’, is out on 26th April on Big Loud Records.
