Review: Sophia Scott continues to evolve & emote on new EP ‘Lifeboat’

Sophia Scott is a Colorado-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose music blends grit, emotion, and genre crossovers. Raised in Boulder, she picked up piano and guitar early and began writing her own songs from a young age. During her time in Los Angeles, she released singles such as ‘White Fence' and ‘Drink Too Much Wine' before relocating to Music City to fully immerse herself in the country world. Since signing with EMPIRE Nashville, she has racked up more than 145 million career streams and earned honours like Pandora’s Artist to Watch, all while gaining recognition for her bold, heart-on-sleeve storytelling.

Her debut full-length album, ‘Barstool Confessions,' arrived in October 2023—the same day she made her Grand Ole Opry debut—and served as a raw emotional statement. Further songs like ‘Buy a Round' saw this talented artist evolving and growing before our eyes. Scott oozed fierce confidence and sexiness throughout that fiery song. ‘I'm loose enough to wear something too tight,' she sings, making us blush in the early part of the song before she danced on the table and sent her reputation south then she went a step further and lent into her bisexual nature on follow up song ‘Either Way.'

‘Lifeboat,' her latest EP, picks up where that journey left off. This next chapter explores life after heartbreak, with the title track capturing her decision to stop being the saviour in relationships and reclaiming her agency. Fans are already embracing it, helping it gain traction on TikTok and Instagram as Sophia continues to embrace a more empowered, unguarded voice.

‘Lifeboat' is a bold, intoxicating blend of sass, soul and self-preservation — a project that finds the Nashville-based artist flexing every side of her artistry. Across six tracks, Scott moves effortlessly from smoky barroom anthems to introspective acoustic ballads, from neon-lit pop to bluesy swagger. It’s an EP that celebrates vulnerability as much as confidence, and in doing so, ‘Lifeboat' positions her as one of the most versatile voices in modern country-pop.

The opening track, ‘Smoke ’Em If You Got ’Em,' sets the tone with playful urgency. It’s all funky guitar licks, drum-driven percussion, and the energy of a wild Nashville night. “They say beggars can’t be choosers,” Scott teases, painting a picture of bar flies at Losers giving in to impulse and whiskey-soaked desire. It’s fun, flirty, and full of the kind of live-wire energy that recalls Miranda Lambert’s ‘Fastest Girl in Town' with a dash of Elle King’s bluesy grit. As openers go, it’s a hell of an invitation — one that dares listeners to lean in and let go.

Things slow down with ‘Acid in Aspen,' a blues-tinged ballad. Here, Scott trades honky-tonk swagger for emotional depth, using a kaleidoscope of drug references — “acid in Aspen, dope out in Denver, cannabis in Cali and Lucy in the sky” — to describe the high of falling in love. “Life’s got a new meaning, how could I ever love another after seeing technicolour?” she asks, her voice gliding over a hazy, dreamlike arrangement. The song feels like Adele jamming with Kacey Musgraves, shimmering with cinematic melancholy. Fans of Scott’s earlier work, like ‘Quit' (2018), will recognise the same aching introspection — only this time, her confidence as both a vocalist and storyteller is sharper than ever.

‘Lights On' pivots sharply into pop territory, showcasing Scott’s knack for infectious hooks. Built on a pulsing 80s-inspired beat, it’s a playful blend of Lionel Richie’s ‘Dancing on the Ceiling' exuberance and the polished power-pop sheen of early Katy Perry. “Love me with the lights on,” she pleads in the chorus, her voice brimming with both vulnerability and confidence. It’s a smart evolution from 2020’s ‘Overdressed,' marrying the same glossy self-assurance with an even more refined pop sensibility. The result is one of Scott’s catchiest songs yet — the kind of track that could light up both radio waves and dance floors.

The heart of the record, though, lies in the title track. ‘Lifeboat' strips away the gloss to reveal raw emotion. Over simple acoustic guitar and delicate vocals, Scott calls herself “the queen of castaways” as she navigates betrayal and self-preservation. “Pirates and sirens on the side,” she sings, conjuring images of deceit and escape. It’s a song about saving yourself before saving anyone else, and when the fiddle and soft backing vocals swell in the final verse, it feels like catharsis. The intimacy recalls the emotional weight of Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Rainbow' and it’s easily one of Scott’s most affecting moments to date.

Elsewhere, ‘Buy a Round' and ‘Chasing Butterflies' bring the energy back up. ‘Buy a Round,' originally released in 2024, remains a bluesy firecracker — a raucous ode to reckless abandon that showcases Scott’s sultry edge. “If you’re feeling a little crazy, come two step my way baby,” she grins, sounding every bit the star of her own honky-tonk movie. ‘Chasing Butterflies,' meanwhile closes the EP on a reflective note, weaving together the project’s central theme: the pursuit of joy, love and freedom, even when it’s fleeting. ‘May you wish upon a star,' Scott offers, urging people to find healing in the hurting. It's a reflective song full of ephemeral atmosphere and wistful wisdom set against that kind of Pop-meets-Country style that artists like Kacey Musgrave excel at.

‘Lifeboat' is Sophia Scott at her most dynamic — an artist unafraid to take risks and bare her soul in equal measure. It’s a record that dances between genres without losing its identity, anchored by Scott’s powerhouse voice and fearless storytelling. Whether she’s lighting up the barroom, baring her soul, or floating away on her own lifeboat, this EP proves she’s steering her own course — and we’re all lucky to be along for the ride.
