This March, Shakespeare’s classic love story, Romeo and Juliet, is set to be re-imagined for 2017 at West Yorkshire Playhouse. The famous romantic tragedy is transported from ancient Verona to a modern-day Northern housing estate in a bold retelling, which captures the impact of raging inter-generational conflict and social unrest.
“Our Romeo and Juliet is a love story for 2017,” explains Artistic Director James Brining. “Set in a pulsating, multi-cultural city where two communities live side-by-side, divided by hatred. Our productions are created in close partnership with our community work. Alongside the professional cast of the show, we’ve recruited a large community chorus from the theatre’s programme of activities for young people, including First Floor and Youth Theatre.”
Director of Romeo and Juliet, Amy Leach adds: “Twenty years ago this play staggered me with its astonishing sense of passion and fury. I now want to create a production that’s rooted in Leeds and inspired by the people and places I’ve known both as a young person here and a professional director.”
Romeo and Juliet is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Friday 3rd March to Saturday 25th March 2017. Â Book online at wyp.org.uk or call Box Office on 0113 213 77 00.
