Review: ‘Single, Out’ Season 3 builds on the show’s world and delivers plenty of laughs

Adam (Will Hutchins) returns home from Sydney after working away for a while. On his return he reunites with his half-brother Ethan (Joel Nankervis), who is an aspiring writer. Their father asks Adam to help Ethan get a job but when Adam introduces him into his world, chaos ensues. While trying to keep Ethan on the straight and narrow, Adam is forced to face up to some of the decisions he’s made in his life, and confront the demons he’s tried to suppress.

‘Single, Out’, the comedy drama series from writer/director Lee Galea, is back for a third season. The penultimate outing for the show, comprises 7 episodes and is every bit as chaotic and fun as the two seasons that came before. Adam is in somewhat of a funk when the season opens, having broken up with Gabe (Jake Hyde) and struggled to move on from that relationship. Meaningless hook-ups don’t seem to be doing much for him so there’s an edge of jealousy when his sexually-fluid half-brother Ethan starts working his way through a series of men.

The season explores the relationship that Adam has with Ethan, although I have to say Ethan’s story is the more engaging one this season, and it also reflects on the decisions that led Adam to this point in his life. What the show does very well is depict situations where Adam (and the characters around him) make impulsive and often bad decisions, which they then have to deal with. Any young person exploring their sexuality will find themselves in all kinds of messes, and that’s what makes these characters so relatable.

Alongside that, Adam has to deal with his fractured relationship with Gabe following their split in season 2. The two characters are still in one another’s orbit, and that comes to a head in the rather uncomfortable fourth episode of the season ‘The Play’, where Adam is publicly humiliated as his dirty laundry is aired for everyone to see.

The only criticism to level at season 3 is that the cast has swelled a little bit meaning that some of your favourite supporting characters from the first two seasons are side-lined a little. Adam’s older brother Clayton (Steven Christou) doesn’t get a lot to do and favourites Gabe and Theo (Jack Brophy) have significantly smaller roles.

As always Will Hutchins is the show’s anchor, able to switch effortlessly between comedy and drama. Unlike the first two seasons, it’s not always as easy to sympathise with Adam this time around, but Hutchins makes him loveable all the same. Joel Nankervis brings a new energy as Ethan, and steals plenty of scenes over the course of the season. It’s fun watching him gradually falling for a mutual friend of his and Adam’s, and trying to deal with the feelings and complications that come with that.

‘Single, Out’ is laugh-out-loud funny and it continues to perfectly capture what it’s like to get to grips with your sexuality as a young person. The episodes are short, meaning you can work your way through the season in no time. Galea has a flair for fitting a lot of material into a short amount of time, and he writes dialogue that feels authentic and relatable. With a final season yet to be released, I can’t wait to see what else is in store for Adam and co. before we say goodbye!
