Review: Blanco Brown oozes romantic soul on new EP ‘Back 2 Basics’

Blanco Brown, the GRAMMY®-nominated artist known for his genre-defying sound, releases his new EP, ‘Back 2 Basics,' today, October 18th. The project transports listeners into a world of love and admiration, all while showcasing Brown’s signature ‘Trailer Trap' blend of country, hip-hop, and soul. Described by Country Swag as “a one-of-a-kind talent in the industry,” Brown navigates themes of desire and devotion through a romantic lineup of songs.

Brown’s journey to this release has been anything but ordinary. After captivating the world with his viral hit ‘The Git Up'—an 11x Platinum track that blended infectious beats with a social dance phenomenon—his rising career was abruptly halted by a near-fatal motorcycle accident. The incident left Brown with multiple injuries and a long road to recovery, but his determination and resilience brought him back to the stage. Now, with a renewed outlook on life and music, ‘Back 2 Basics' represents more than just a new chapter for Brown—it’s a testament to love, simplicity, and the joy of embracing life’s second chances.

Brown’s latest EP, ‘Back 2 Basics,' is a genre-blurring project that merges his signature ‘Trailer Trap' sound with elements of soul, pop, blues, and country. Across the EP’s four tracks, Brown showcases his ability to craft songs that feel both personal and universal, exploring themes of love, nostalgia, and family with a lush and soulful approach. His vocal versatility takes centre stage, transforming each song into a melodic experience that is both rich and vibrant.

The title track, ‘Back 2 Basics,' opens with an irregular drumbeat and finger snaps that pave the way for Brown’s lilting, soulful voice. The song’s genre-blending production fuses trap, blues, and country, creating an irresistible groove as Brown sings about longing to return to the simplicity of a relationship. ‘Beautiful to Me' slows things down with a bluesy banjo and fiddle arrangement as Brown sings a touching ode to his mother. The spoken-word middle section adds a heartfelt, personal touch, making this track one of the emotional highlights of the EP.

‘Holding My Breath' ups the tempo with a bustling mix of southern pop and country, driven by gang vocals and a lively fiddle. It’s a busy but balanced track that finds Brown wrestling with love, while the song’s ending — marked by a big sigh — adds a refreshing sense of vulnerability. Finally, ‘Sooner or Later' brings the EP to a gentle close, with a ballad that reflects on childhood and the inevitability of growing up. Brown’s smooth, blues-inflected vocals are restrained yet powerful, capturing the bittersweet nature of nostalgia without over-romanticising the past.

Throughout ‘Back 2 Basics' Brown’s vocals remain the standout feature, rich and lush, and always paired with well-crafted melodies. The EP is a slick, romantic collection of songs that showcase Brown’s unique ability to blend genres seamlessly, offering listeners a taste of his ever-evolving sound.
