Randall King is taking his latest album back to its roots with ‘Neon (Unplugged),' a stripped-down reimagining of his sophomore major-label release, ‘Into The Neon.' Recorded at Sound Stage Studios, the album is out now and showcases a raw, intimate side of King’s neo-traditional country sound. Listen Here.
“One of the things I love most about country music is the ability to take one song and completely change the sound just by stripping it down to vocals, guitar, and a dobro,” King explains. “Country is equal parts two-stepping in a honky-tonk and sitting around a fire singing your heart out, and I wanted to capture both.”
Where ‘Into The Neon' pulsed with the energy of neon-lit dancehalls and honky-tonks, ‘Neon (Unplugged)' reflects the quiet, open skies of King’s West Texas roots. The album includes acoustic versions of fan favourites like ‘When My Baby’s In Boots' and ‘What Doesn’t Kill Me,' along with a special feature from singer-songwriter Dan Smalley on ‘Tonk ‘Til I Die.'
Into The Neon, released in January 2024, earned critical acclaim, with Holler calling King “the genre’s neo-traditional figurehead” and Texas Monthly praising his deep Texas country roots. The album was also named one of the top country releases of 2024 by ourselves and Whiskey Riff and produced King’s first country radio single, ‘I Could Be That Rain,' which has already gained significant traction.
With a reputation for electrifying live performances and a dedication to keeping traditional country music alive, King continues to make his mark. ‘Neon (Unplugged)' offers fans a new way to experience his music, bringing the heart and soul of his songs to the forefront.
